Discover Friesenried: Bird Trail, Churches and Cycling Tours
Accommodation in Friesenried
Friesenried combines nature themes along its bird trail with local history that can be read in its churches. There is also a cycling tour with hardly any climbs that passes through Friesenried. Depending on whether you want to focus on nature, activity or history, there are different reasons to discover the town.
Nature themes along the bird trail
The Friesenried bird trail features 50 native bird species at a total of 25 stations. A bird quiz, a Bandolino puzzle and a listening funnel supplement the stations. In addition to looking, the trail offers puzzles and listening as different ways to explore the subject.
Since summer 2025, the bird trail has also featured a sandarium. This sunny, artificially created sandy nesting site is intended for ground-nesting wild bees and other insects. The trail therefore focuses not only on birds, but also on the lives of other insects.
The Vogelnest wooden pavilion stands along the trail. Through a tube, you can look inside nesting boxes. For directions: the bird trail is accessible via the OAL3 and road 2055; parking is available at the car park in Aschthal in the Königsberger Forst.
The Green Classroom is also part of this nature theme. The forest stage in Friesenried was established as an extension of the Green Classroom at the LBV bird trail. Groups wishing to visit the Green Classroom can register with the Friesenried primary school office; the telephone number is 08347 207.
Cycling tour and winter activities
A cycling tour with hardly any climbs runs from Lauchdorf via Friesenried to Bad Wörishofen. If keeping climbs to a minimum is important when planning your bike ride, this is a useful point of reference. The route offers a different focus from a stay devoted primarily to the bird trail or the churches.
For cross-country skiing in winter, the best-known trail starts in Friesenried’s Aschthal. This adds seasonal winter activities to your planning alongside nature experiences and cycling.
Churches and local history
The parish church of St. Joseph in Friesenried reflects a marked shift in church architecture. The Baroque Church of St. Joseph, built in 1695, was demolished and replaced in 1929 with a modern, simple new building. Following its construction, the church finally became the parish church for Friesenried and Salenwang. The transition from a Baroque building to a simple new church marks a distinct chapter in local history.
Between Friesenried and Salenwang stands the Church of St. Bartholomew and St. Cyriacus, consecrated on 29 October 1508. The choir, nave and church tower are late Gothic, while the present furnishings are late Baroque. The combination of late Gothic architecture and later furnishings distinguishes this church from the new parish church of St. Joseph. The chapel on Riedberg is also located southeast of Friesenried.
Friesenried and the Ostallgäu region
The wider travel destination of Ostallgäu offers further routes that provide a broader setting than the cycling tour through Friesenried. The regional routes of the Ostallgäu Cycling Travel Region extend across the entire Ostallgäu. They are each 25 to 76 kilometres long, fully signposted and each have their own theme. In addition, Ostallgäu has 32 local hiking routes showcasing special treasures in nature and in its towns and villages.
Starting with the experiences that matter to you can help you then narrow your search to your preferred destination area.
