Discover Kißlegg: Castle, Obersee and moorland
Accommodation in Kißlegg
Kißlegg brings together Baroque architectural history, art and local history with water activities and nature trails. This offers a variety of ways to spend your stay: the New Castle and the church are highlights of cultural exploration in the town, while Obersee and the moors offer opportunities for outdoor activities.
Castle, art and local history
Kißlegg’s New Castle stands in the heart of the town, surrounded by an English-style castle park. It was built between 1721 and 1727 to a design by Füssen master builder Johann Georg Fischer. Today, it regularly hosts exhibitions of contemporary art and is also home to a local history museum. Architectural history, contemporary art and local history come together in one place.
Every year, the Christmas market is held in and around the castle on the first weekend of Advent. The exact dates vary from year to year. The town centre is also home to the magnificent Baroque church of St. Gallus and Ulrich, with its Augsburg silver treasure. The Old Castle, a Renaissance and Baroque building, stands on the edge of Lake Zellersee. Together, these buildings offer different insights into Kißlegg’s historic architecture.
Baroque townscape and discoveries to hear
The app-based LAUSCHTOUR guides visitors through Kißlegg using GPS. This audio journey of discovery leads through the Baroque gem of Kißlegg, at the western end of the main route of the Upper Swabian Baroque Route. It starts on the north side of the New Castle. The audio format offers a distinctive way to experience the town, complementing views of individual buildings with a guided tour of discovery.
Group tours in Kißlegg can be booked at any time through the Guest and Citizen Office, regardless of the season or opening hours. A nature tour to Burgermoos, close to Kißlegg, can also be booked there. Check the booking arrangements before your trip.
Water activities on Obersee
The lido on Kißlegg’s Obersee offers pedal boats, kayaks and stand-up paddleboards for short trips on the water. There are several ways to enjoy time on the lake. Rentals are seasonal; confirm what is currently available before your trip.
The lido also has a kiosk that is open daily, changing rooms, showers and toilets. As facilities may change seasonally, check the latest information before your visit.
Play and picnic facilities at St. Anna
From April to October, the St. Anna family recreation area offers a large space with play equipment, an open playing field with goals and a water play area. The field adds space for outdoor exercise alongside the play equipment and water activities. Benches and tables are available for picnics; a barbecue hut with a grill can be rented through the Guest and Citizen Office. The operating season and facilities may change, so check before your visit.
Moorland trails with different highlights
A 3.9-kilometre circular trail on boardwalks runs through Burgermoos, close to Kißlegg. The nature trail features interactive stations and activity areas. A few kilometres south of Kißlegg lies Arrisrieder Moos, which also has its own nature trail. The moor can be visited in any season with suitable footwear; it is especially attractive during the heather bloom in August.
The two nature experiences are easy to compare by their different features: at Burgermoos, the circular route, boardwalks and interactive stations shape the trail. At Arrisrieder Moos, suitable footwear and the seasonal heather bloom are important considerations. This can help you decide whether to prioritise a circular walk with interactive stations or the seasonal appeal of the heather in bloom.
