Schwangau: Royal Castles, Lakes and Mountain Trails
Accommodation in Schwangau
Schwangau combines royal castles and cultural attractions with lakes and opportunities for hiking and cycling. At the museum, you can discover the history of the Bavarian royal family; the lakes offer a range of leisure activities. You can also spend your days in different ways: sightseeing, exploring trails through the countryside, spending time by the water or visiting the thermal spa.
Royal Castles, Museum and Park
The Museum of the Bavarian Kings presents the history of the Bavarian royal family across 16 exhibition rooms on two floors. The exhibition features original artefacts and interactive museum technology. You can explore the museum independently, with or without an audio guide. Neuschwanstein Castle is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “The Castles of King Ludwig II of Bavaria”; Hohenschwangau Castle has been preserved as an exceptional monument of Romantic architecture.
In the Ostallgäu region, visits to the two royal castles of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau are only possible as part of a guided tour. The royal castles cannot be reached by private car. For your visit, use only the paid car parks P1 to P4 in the valley of Hohenschwangau.
The Schwansee Park lies below Hohenschwangau Castle. The former royal landscape garden is now a local recreation area and a habitat for rare and protected plants. Here, the character of a historic park meets a modern recreational and natural space.
Four Lakes and Ways to Enjoy the Water
Schwangau is home to four lakes covering a total area of just under 14 square kilometres. Each offers its own leisure activities and views of the mountain landscape. At Lake Forggensee, which covers around 17 square kilometres, you can sail, row, go stand-up paddleboarding or swim. SUP boards, pedal boats and kayaks are available to rent there, and courses are also offered.
From June to mid-October, you can explore Lake Forggensee on a one- or two-hour boat trip. If you plan to take a trip, check the timetable before your visit. On the southern shore of Lake Alpsee lies the Alpseebad, a natural outdoor swimming area with a wooden jetty, a floating island and spacious sunbathing lawns.
Hikes and Cycling Tours Around Schwangau
More than 120 kilometres of hiking trails in Schwangau range from easy walking paths and half- and full-day hikes to challenging mountain tours. The free hiking pass for children and adults is available from the Schwangau Tourist Information and includes routes of varying difficulty. One verified example is the “Neuschwansteinblick” circular trail, which follows flat paths from Schwangau to Hohenschwangau.
Schwangau is also on the long-distance Lechweg trail. Stretching 125 kilometres, it follows one of Europe’s last wild river landscapes from the source of the Lech near Lake Formarinsee in Lech am Arlberg to the Lech Falls in Füssen. The area around Schwangau also has a network of more than 90 kilometres of cycling routes, with destinations for families, leisure cyclists, e-bike riders and mountain bikers. Trail conditions and seasonal availability may vary; check them before your hike or cycling tour.
Thermal Spa and Planning the Right Trip
Kristall Therme Schwangau has six sodium bicarbonate and brine pools, five saunas and a steam bath. Relaxation areas, a restaurant, a café and a pool bar round out the facilities; the thermal spa offers views of Neuschwanstein Castle and Hohenschwangau Castle.
Next, consider which accommodation location best suits your plans. This way, your search is guided by the experiences that matter to your stay, rather than by trying to fit in as many activities as possible.
