A former moated castle, a fossil collecting site, and history spanning several centuries give Titting a wide range of facets. In the market town, architecture and brewing tradition lead to a specific historic place; at the fossil collecting site, the search itself takes center stage. Other cultural themes extend into the municipality and to Eichstätt, an expressly separate travel destination. The focus you want your trip to have can also help guide your search for accommodation.

Moated castle and brewing tradition in Titting

The former moated castle is in the upper part of the market town of Titting, at the foot of Kreuzberg. Its irregular octagonal layout is surrounded by two-story wings dating from the 17th and 18th centuries, which enclose the courtyard. This makes it possible to see the layout in direct relation to the courtyard and the different periods in which the wings were built. The castle’s history also includes a long brewing tradition: in 1707, the Prince-Bishop of Eichstätt had a brewery established there; beer has been brewed there ever since. The architecture and brewing history provide two distinct historical points of interest.

Fossil hunting with an open-ended outcome

At the Titting fossil collecting site, visitors may, with a little luck and patience, find fossilized plants and crinoids; ammonites are occasionally found as well. Smaller finds may be taken home as prehistoric souvenirs. The range of possible finds is therefore varied, although it is not possible to plan for a particular discovery. For families, searching together can itself be a moment of discovery: the focus is not just on a fossil, but also on the patience involved in looking for it.

History and trails in the municipality

Brunneck Castle Ruins date from the 14th to 15th centuries and lie above Altdorf in the Anlautertal valley; only remains survive today. Finds from graves illustrate a much earlier period, showing that the Anlautertal valley was already settled around 1000 BC. Evidence of early settlement and the remains of a medieval castle thus represent different periods in the region’s history.

The traditional Jura house architectural style of the Altmühl-Jura region is also represented in the municipality of Titting, with renovated examples and limestone slate roofs. St. Andrew’s Church in Kaldorf houses a Gothic Madonna and Child dating from around 1480. Seven sculptures depict the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Limes. The themes therefore range from historic architecture to religious art and the depiction of the Limes.

Three routes are relevant for finding your way along named trails: the Limes Trail, the Pilgrim Trail, and the Nuremberg–Eichstätt Way of St. James pass through the municipality of Titting. Another annual tradition is the visit to the forest chapel in Erkertshofen for the Antonifest. The festival always takes place on the Sunday after June 13—a specific calendar date to bear in mind if this event is part of your plans.

Eichstätt: more culture and fossils

In the wider travel destination of Eichstätt, the Jura Museum has its own focus on fossils from the Solnhofen limestone. It also displays the original Eichstätt specimen of Archaeopteryx. Another way to explore the subject of fossils is the Eichstätt Fossil Trail: a moderately difficult, nine-kilometer circular route designated as suitable for families.

Willibaldsburg Castle was built in 1355 by Bishop Berthold, Burgrave of Zollern, and served as the bishop’s residence until 1725. The 420-meter-long castle retains walls and bastions, the arsenal, the 63-meter-long gate hall, and the Gemmingen building with its two towers. In the 1,500-square-meter bastion garden, the Hortus Eystettensis, destroyed during the Thirty Years’ War, was brought back to life after 400 years; visitors can discover many of the original plant species there. Cathedral Square also has its own historical significance: it lies on the oldest settled ground in the city of Eichstätt.

Eichstätt’s culinary scene includes offerings from the Eichstätt Genuss-Wirte. Several times a year, they serve special dishes under the motto “Eichstätt kocht...,” including, for example, savory Altmühltal lamb dishes. The museum, garden, city history, and cuisine thus offer distinct themes for a trip that also includes Eichstätt.

Choose accommodation based on your travel interests

If you are looking for accommodation in Titting, first consider whether the moated castle and brewing tradition, fossil hunting, or historic sites in the municipality will be the focus of your trip. If you also want to include Eichstätt, you can factor the museum, Willibaldsburg Castle, the bastion garden, the fossil trail, and regional cuisine into your plans.
