Eching on Lake Ammersee is located on the lake’s north shore. The lake, a protected moorland landscape, a wooded recreation area and several cycle routes shape the town and its surroundings. There are also historic churches. When planning your trip, you can consider whether you’d mainly like to spend time by the lake, explore the landscape, cycle or learn about the town’s history.

Ampermoos and Weingarten

The Ampermoos nature reserve stretches from the north shore of Lake Ammersee to Grafrath and shapes the landscape around Eching on Lake Ammersee. It is an important habitat for meadow-nesting birds such as the common snipe and the great bustard. The moor formed after the last Ice Age as a lake-filling moor and is now one of the largest remaining river-valley fen complexes in southern Bavaria. This expansive landscape and its natural history offer a different perspective from views of the lake.

The wooded Weingarten recreation area borders Eching to the south. It has a lido and sunbathing lawns, a sailing club and play areas for children. If you’re planning a visit to the lido, check its current opening status in advance. The recreation area in the southern part of the municipality has two large car parks.

Cycle Routes, Walks and Boat Trips

Eching on Lake Ammersee lies at the intersection of two cycle routes: the Ammersee Cycle Route from Munich to Bad Wörishofen meets the Ammer-Amper Long-Distance Cycle Route here. The Three Lakes Tour, which starts at the car park at the Eching on Lake Ammersee recreation area, is another useful reference when planning a ride. Eching is also a suitable starting point or destination for walks and cycle trips around the lake and into the surrounding countryside.

Boat services can also be planned seasonally: From Easter until the end of October, boats operated by Bayerische Seenschifffahrt stop in the neighbouring village of Stegen. Stegen can be reached from Eching on foot or by bicycle. Check the current operating days when planning your trip. In summer, Lake Ammersee offers a variety of water sports.

Churches and Architectural History

St. Sebastian’s Plague Chapel stands at the entrance to Eching, by the Windach bridge, and was built in 1651. Its stucco work is by Franz Xaver Schmuzer of the Wessobrunn School of stuccoists. St. Peter and Paul Parish Church adds another historic note to the townscape: it was extended in the 18th century and has a high altar from the Rococo period. Together, the two buildings illustrate different aspects of local architectural history.
