Egling combines moorland landscapes, hiking trails in protected natural areas and historic buildings from different periods. There is also an extensive network of cycle touring routes and sights in several districts. If you are looking for accommodation, you can first decide whether your trip will focus mainly on nature watching, outdoor activities or culture. The options range from the Eglinger Filz and Pupplinger Au to churches, a mill and Celtic earthworks—different themes to inspire your own excursion ideas.

Observe moorland landscapes and nature

The Eglinger Filz was designated a protected landscape area in 1986. In 2003, it was also designated a Natura 2000 site (FFH area) because it is home to the rare large white-faced darter. Plants found in the Eglinger Filz include shrub birch and sundew; breeding bird species found there include the tree pipit, red-backed shrike and teal. The Eglinger/Ascholdinger Filz covers around 200 hectares and is the largest contiguous moorland complex in the northern part of the Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen district. Its nature-related features range from the extensive moorland landscape to specific plant and bird species—an opportunity for anyone interested in habitats while travelling.

The Pupplinger Au nature reserve offers another perspective on nature and is known for its rare flowers and plants. Hiking trails run through Pupplinger Au, as well as through the Eglinger Filze – Mooshamer Weiher protected landscape area. These two areas offer distinct, clearly defined starting points for hikes. It is worth checking the current trail conditions before setting out.

Explore on foot or by bike

Egling has an extensive network of cycle touring routes. One specific regional cycling tour is called “Puppling-Deining-Eulenschwang-Thanning-Egling-Ergertshausen-Puppling” and passes through Egling. If you are choosing between hiking and cycling, you can compare the trails through the two named protected areas with the cycle touring network and its regional route.

Its core dates from around 1430, it was remodelled in the Baroque style in the first half of the 18th century, and its tower was renovated in 1820/21. The Catholic pilgrimage church of St Sebald is also a hall church with a narrower chancel and dates from the second half of the 17th century. The Angermühle adds a historic watermill to the selection, with a building dating from the second half of the 18th century. Celtic earthworks are also among Egling’s sights in the districts of Deining, Neufahrn and Endlhausen.
