Geigant: Hiking Trails and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Geigant
In Geigant, circular hiking trails lead to viewpoints and notable landmarks; at the same time, St. Bartholomew’s Parish Church shapes the village’s character. You can plan your stay around hikes and also learn about the village’s history.
Circular trails with a variety of landmarks
The moderate Wm 14 circular hiking trail, the Geigant Zwirenzel Trail, starts and ends at the bus stop/school in Geigant. The route is 5.32 kilometers long, with a stated duration of 2:00 hours. Along the way, it passes the cemetery, the Zwirenzel viewpoint rock and the Zillendorfer viewpoint. The moderate rating and stated duration provide concrete reference points for planning your day.
Another marked circular trail leads from Geigant via Zwirenzel and Machtesberg to Kathlfelsen and on to Arberblick; it returns to Geigant via Roßfhof. The sequence of named places gives this route its own orientation. Check trail conditions according to the season. At the Geigant Zwirenzel Trail, the summit cross offers views of Geigant, Bleschenberg and Schwarzwihrberg. The summit circuit features a stone eagle and an “iron” badger; individual installations may change.
Village character and historical traces
St. Bartholomew’s Parish Church marks the architectural center of the village and shapes its character. A partially preserved epitaph of the Kagerer family’s successors stands in front of the new church in Geigant. Archaeological finds from the Middle Ages and the early modern period add another historical layer: they are recorded as a monument in the area of the former castle and the former Church of St. Bartholomew. Together, these different traces offer ways to experience Geigant not only through its hiking trails, but also through its history.
Bleschenberg: chapel, mine and observation tower
Near Geigant, Bleschenberg is home to the Salve Regina Chapel and the excavated medieval mine known as “Schrazelloch.” To reach the observation tower on Bleschenberg, drive from Waldmünchen along State Road 2146 toward Cham. Just before Geigant, turn right and follow the signs to Sinzendorf. As visitor arrangements may change, check the latest local information before your visit.
Waldmünchen as a separate regional destination
The wider Waldmünchen destination has 20 local hiking trails of varying lengths and difficulty levels, as well as two signposted and certified terrain therapy trails. The wider network includes the Goldsteig, Pandurensteig, Nurtschweg, Upper Palatinate Castle Trail and European long-distance trail E6. This selection offers a different scale for planning hikes than the circular trails in Geigant: you can first decide whether to focus on local landmarks or also consider the listed routes in the Waldmünchen trail network.
For winter activities, Waldmünchen has a 5.6-kilometer DSV-certified winter hiking trail and five snowshoe trails. Check availability and conditions according to the season. The cycling routes are also clearly described: all 16 signposted routes are circuits and start in Waldmünchen at the parking lot by the youth education center. As the number of routes and start arrangements may change, check the latest information before planning your trip.
Waldmünchen’s cultural attractions include the Borderland and Trenck Museum. Its three floors present exhibitions on “Life on the Border” and “Trenck the Pandur”; check the latest visitor information before visiting. The annual Waldmünchen Horse Pilgrimage takes place on the second Sunday in September. The riders gather in the market square and travel in procession, praying and singing, to the pilgrimage church in Ast. Check the dates and schedule for the relevant year before your trip.
