Hirschbach: Rock Formations, Via Ferratas and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Hirschbach
Hirschbach is located in the Hirschbachtal valley, in the Franconian Switzerland–Franconian Jura Nature Park. Rock formations and climbing routes shape the opportunities for actively exploring the area. The municipality is in the Amberg-Sulzbach district of Bavaria and lies at an elevation of approximately 440 to 600 metres above sea level. If you are looking for accommodation, you can first decide whether hiking, via ferratas or rock climbing will be the main focus of your trip.
Rock Formations and Via Ferratas
There are more than 59 different climbing routes at the Mittelbergwand. Another striking rock formation is Schwarzer Brand: the Höhenglücksteig begins on the southwest side of this rock massif in the Hirschbachtal valley. A via ferrata course for children is located shortly before its starting point. The Höhenglücksteig can also be bypassed without using a wire rope or safety equipment. When planning, you can therefore consider different options, while keeping in mind that the bypass is not the same as the via ferrata itself.
The Norissteig also connects specific place names with clear timing: it starts in Fischbrunn, ends in Mittelhirschbach and is about six kilometres long. The walking time is given as approximately 1.5 hours; those climbing the route should allow about 3.5 to 4.5 hours. These estimates relate to different ways of completing the route and help you assess the time required in advance.
The Norissteig is equipped with steel pins and wire ropes and does not exceed difficulty grade 1. Nevertheless, it should not be attempted without protective equipment. Before setting out, check the technical conditions of the route and your personal safety requirements. The difficulty rating does not replace this assessment.
Hiking with Caves and Viewpoints
A hiking route starts at Hirschbach village square and focuses on rocks, caves and viewpoints in the Bavarian Jura of the Upper Palatinate. Seasonal restrictions are also part of planning this route: entering the caves along it is prohibited from 1 October to 31 March. Making fires is prohibited year-round. If you choose this route, take both rules into account.
The Norissteig and Höhenglücksteig differ considerably in terms of activity and time required. Check the technical requirements for your planned route before basing your stay around it.
More Impressions in the Wider Amberg-Sulzbach Destination
The wider Amberg-Sulzbach destination offers further landscape highlights, including imposing limestone cliffs, gentle Jura hills, extensive forests and river valleys. The Felsenweg is a 2.7-kilometre hike from Sackdilling through the rock labyrinth to the Bauernlöcher; the walking time is about 45 minutes. By comparison, the Norissteig—with a length of around six kilometres and different time estimates for walking and climbing—offers a different framework for planning a day. These regional examples are attractions in the wider destination, not additional features of Hirschbach.
The wider Amberg-Sulzbach destination also has a rich cultural offering. The East Bavarian Mining and Industry Museum at Kultur-Schloss Theuern researches and documents mining and industry in the East Bavarian region, keeping its history alive. Since 2023, the Kirwan festivals in the Amberg-Sulzbach region have been part of Bavaria’s intangible cultural heritage. They are celebrated each year in their respective locations and are open to visitors and local residents. When choosing a destination, you can combine active days among rocks and trails with other regional interests, without conflating the different places and attractions.
