Kastl combines history, landscape and outdoor activities in different ways: information panels introduce selected houses and objects, juniper slopes shape the landscape, and a viaduct creates a striking feature along the cycle route. There are also art stops, a heated outdoor swimming pool and fishing on the Lauterach. When planning your trip, you can consider whether you want to focus mainly on history, hiking, cycling or seasonal activities.

History along the circular trail

The Historic Circular Trail in Kastl uses 33 information panels to introduce the history of selected houses and their associated objects. A longer, yellow-marked route adds another 18 panels. It leads to the monastery castle, to an area on the edge of Kastl, and onward to Pfaffenhofen and Pattershofen; the full route takes about two and a half hours. This time estimate provides a practical basis for planning, while the panels draw attention to individual buildings and objects. The castle complex on Klosterberg is also one of the sights in the Kastl market municipality.

Cycle route and viaduct

On the Schweppermann Cycle Route, the section between Kastl and Ursensollen crosses an 18-metre-high viaduct with a view. The monastery castle with its Romanesque basilica in Kastl is also listed as a sight along the cycle route. This offers different interests to explore: crossing the viaduct by bike and discovering the history of the monastery castle.

Juniper slopes and the Lauterach Valley

The Lauterach Valley near Kastl runs from east to west and has sunny south-facing slopes. The Juniper Hiking Trail passes through fragrant juniper slopes, where thyme, Carthusian pinks, gentians and orchids bloom. As flowering times vary with the season, it is worth considering when to visit if you want to see particular plants.

The juniper slopes were created through grazing by cattle and sheep. This connects the plant life with the history of landscape management: the slopes are not just a backdrop for the trail, but also an example of how grazing has shaped the landscape around Kastl.

Art and nature experiences

The art trail stop in Kastl is next to the former railway station. The artwork at the stop tells one aspect of the monastery castle’s history, adding a distinctive feature alongside the historical information panels. The “Climbing Eagle Owl” nature experience station explores how climbers and rock-dwelling wildlife coexist. In this way, local history and nature are presented in different forms.
