Discover Stadtbergen: Churches, Art and Activities
Accommodation in Stadtbergen
Stadtbergen has a distinctive cultural profile: churches with a long history, a permanent exhibition on reverse glass painting, contemporary art and a sculpture park each offer a different perspective. There are also a pump track, a Kneipp facility and a 9-hole golf course.
Churches with their own architectural history
Perched on Kirchberg hill in Leitershofen, slightly above the original village centre, stands the Baroque St. Oswald’s Church, richly adorned. It was built in 1732 to plans by Füssen master builder Johann Georg Fischer. In 1928, the church was extended by one bay; from 1979 to 1983, it underwent extensive restoration. Its construction, extension and restoration can thus be seen as distinct stages in its history. St. Oswald has not been a parish church since 1970; the rosary is regularly prayed there and an evening Mass is held.
The parish church of St. Nicholas was built in 1730/31 on the site of an earlier late Gothic church. Set on a hill, it is a focal point and landmark of the city of Stadtbergen, and also appears on the city’s coat of arms. Its interior consists of a single-nave hall with a narrower choir; ceiling paintings by the artists Bergmüller and Albrecht define the space. The church’s history, local significance and interior design each offer a different way to explore it.
From reverse glass painting to sculpture art
Since 2006, the Dr. Georg Frank Altenhilfe Foundation in Stadtbergen has housed the Hilda Sandtner Foundation’s permanent exhibition “Art Behind Glass.” It features 63 international works of reverse glass painting spanning four centuries, from the 17th to the 20th century. Its clearly defined subject sets the exhibition apart from the town’s other art offerings.
The Am Pfarrhof Leitershofen art space is dedicated to contemporary art. It exhibits painting, drawing, sculpture, installation and photography. The sculpture park on August-Abenstein-Weg presents, every three years, the finalists of the Stadtbergen Sculpture Art Prize, which is open to artists throughout Bavaria. Together, these venues showcase a range of art forms: a permanent exhibition, a space for contemporary works and a presentation of the finalists in a sculpture competition.
Leisure and getting around
The leisure facilities also offer a range of activities. Stadtbergen has a pump track for mountain bikes and skateboards, a Kneipp facility and a 9-hole golf course. These bring together everything from cycling and skating to Kneipp treatments and golf, though they need not appeal to the same leisure interests.
Large parts of Stadtbergen are served by tram lines 2 and 6 and by various bus routes operated by the Augsburg transit company.
More to explore in the wider destination of Augsburg
The wider destination of Augsburg offers more nature and art experiences. The Bonstetten LandArt Art Trail is a 5.65-kilometre circular hiking route; along the trail, artist Hama Lohrmann explains his sculptures in person. Another route is the three-kilometre meditation trail from the Oberschönenfeld Cistercian Abbey to the Weiherhof on the edge of the Schwarzachtal valley. The distances differ considerably: the meditation trail is three kilometres long, while the LandArt Art Trail is 5.65 kilometres.
The Augsburg district has a well-developed network of cycle paths. The Stauden, Holzwinkel and Reischenau regions are part of the Augsburg – Western Forests Nature Park. Westwood Alpacas regularly offers alpaca hikes and excursions through the nature park. These examples add cycling, hiking, art and nature to the wider destination of Augsburg.
