Discover Weißenhorn
Accommodation in Weißenhorn
Weißenhorn combines a historic Old Town with stories of the city you can listen to, museum culture and signposted circular trails. This lets you tailor your stay to what interests you most: historic buildings, exhibitions or getting active among forests and meadows.
Old Town history on foot and by ear
The Weißenhorn audio tour takes you through the historic Old Town and brings the city’s history to life through digital audio. It is available free of charge via the Bayerisch-Schwaben-Lauschtour app, which is available in the App Store. As app availability may change, it is best to check before your trip. If you prefer to hear stories on a guided tour, the night watchman’s tour offers a different perspective: accompanied by Paul Silberbaur, you walk through quiet lanes, past historic half-timbered houses and significant historic buildings. The night watchman’s song, halberd, horn and lantern are all part of the experience.
A guided city tour also takes in notable landmarks. It begins at the Upper City Gate, built in 1494, and continues to the Catholic parish church of the Assumption of Mary. The Fugger Castle and the imposing parish church define the historic city skyline at the southern end of the former town wall; the massive gate towers are also striking features. These buildings give the Old Town its historic character, while the audio tour puts the city’s history centre stage.
Museums, theatre and local traditions
The Weißenhorn City Archaeological Museum focuses on traces of the Stone Age, remains from the Roman period, and evidence of everyday life in the Middle Ages and Early Modern period. A notable item in the collection is a medieval gravestone from Attenhofen. A Hebrew inscription can be read on its reverse. Founded in 1908, the Weißenhorn Local History Museum has an exceptionally extensive collection for a city of its size. It is closed until further notice due to renovation work. Check before your trip whether it has reopened.
For theatre, the Historic City Theatre Weißenhorn offers a Neoclassical auditorium with 140 seats. It is considered Bavaria’s smallest theatre. Markets are also part of the city’s history: they have been a tradition in Weißenhorn for centuries. During the summer months, the city park hosts a varied programme of sports, music, open-air cinema and other activities. Its seasonal schedule is a useful guide when planning your trip.
Circular trails and outdoor activities
Weißenhorn has signposted Nordic walking and running routes. The circular trails range from 4 to 19 kilometres and pass through forests and meadows, as well as along paved sections. They connect the districts and Pfaffenhofen. The varying distances and trail surfaces give you practical options for planning how active you want your tour to be. The city also presents cycling routes in and around Weißenhorn.
Another starting point for a tour is Weißenhorn railway station, where the Wasservogel Runde begins at Herzog-Georg-Straße 11. The Gartenparadies Runde leads to the district show garden, the historic Old Town and the city park. In the garden, visitors can find inspiration for nature-friendly garden care. The routes differ in the places they visit and the interests they cater to, so you don’t need to assume that every tour has the same focus.
Gardens and practical information
The Neu-Ulm District’s show garden is located nearby, west of Weißenhorn. It features magnificent flowers, fragrant roses, healing herbs, as well as juicy fruit and fresh organic vegetables. Free guided tours for groups of ten or more are available by prior appointment. If you’re planning to visit the garden with a group, book your tour in advance.
If you’re travelling by motorhome, you’ll find four free motorhome parking spaces at car park P3 Süd in Weißenhorn, close to the city centre. They are about 500 metres from the outdoor swimming pool. As facilities and conditions may change, check the latest information before you travel. The cultural and outdoor activities mentioned here offer various reasons to include Weißenhorn in your search for suitable accommodation; you can decide which focus matters for your trip based on the experiences that interest you.
