Discover Rohrstetten: Trails and History
Accommodation in Rohrstetten
Explore Rohrstetten actively on signposted trails while also learning about its history. Two circular hikes start in the village and are considered easy; another route leads to the observation tower on the Brotjacklriegel. This lets you include shorter circuits and a longer route with ascents and descents in your plans. The Gunthersteig is also part of the village’s character: it is both historically significant and part of one of the hiking routes described here.
Circular Hikes and Views from the Brotjacklriegel
The signposted nature park circular hike, about 6 km long, starts in the village center. It passes through Gneisting, Hunding and Padling before returning to Rohrstetten, and is considered easy. These stops make for a varied route, while both the starting and finishing points are in the village.
A second signposted circular hike is about 5 km long. From Rohrstetten, the route first follows a forest road to the Gunthersteig, then returns via Zueding. This circuit is also considered easy. Compared directly with the approximately 6 km circuit via Gneisting, Hunding and Padling, it is shorter, but it too follows a clearly described circular route.
If you would like to combine a longer hike with a viewpoint, you can take the signposted trail to the observation tower on the Brotjacklriegel. It starts in Rohrstetten, covers about 7.5 km and leads to the tower with ascents and descents. From there, the panoramic view extends across the Lallinger Winkel and the Danube Valley. Trail conditions may change; check local conditions before setting out. You should also check on site whether the tower is accessible for this hike.
Rohrstetten and the Historic Gunthersteig
Rohrstetten is documented as far back as 1148 and is considered the municipality’s oldest documented settlement. The old Gunthersteig ran through the village and connected the monasteries of Niederaltaich and Rinchnach. This connection is part of Rohrstetten’s historical significance and gives the trail of the same name another point of interest alongside its role as part of the approximately 5 km circular hike.
When choosing between the local routes, different questions come into play: would you prefer one of the circular hikes considered easy, a longer route with ascents and descents, or a circuit that leads to the Gunthersteig? The approximate distances of 5, 6 and 7.5 km provide a concrete guide. Since the trails start in Rohrstetten, you can easily factor them into your plans for a stay in the village.
Hiking Trails in the Wider Destination of Hunding
The wider destination of Hunding offers more hiking routes. The approximately 5 km Hunding Goldgräbersteig is a circular trail starting from the center of Hunding. It passes the former gold mine, crosses Sondorfer Berg and returns to Hunding through Sondorf. A shorter circular route is the approximately 3 km Birkenödweg: it also starts in the village center, passes through Kieflitz and returns to Hunding.
Another hiking trail is about 2.5 km long. From the center of Hunding, it follows GoldbergstraĂźe and a sunken lane in the direction of the mountain village of Langfurth. The other two Hunding trails are circular hikes; this one, by contrast, leads in the direction of Langfurth. The Hunding routes can therefore be compared with the Rohrstetten hikes in terms of length and route.
Fruit growing is also part of the region’s heritage: it has been practised in Hunding and the Lallinger Winkel since the 8th century. The mild climate fostered this long tradition.
