Köglitz invites you to discover a distinctive chapel, routes for cycling and hiking, and a local bread product. The Theresien Chapel gives the village a distinctive theme; nearby, Waldeck Castle adds another historical destination.

The Theresien Chapel and its history

The Theresien Chapel, built in Köglitz in 2011, is dedicated to Saint Thérèse of Lisieux. Two small towers and a gleaming copper roof characterize its exterior. Inside, there is a life-size figure of Christ and a Way of the Cross designed by Irene Schleicher. A relic of Saint Thérèse of Lisieux is kept in the altar; relics of her parents, who were also canonized, are housed in the chapel wall. In this way, the chapel combines distinctive architectural features with a special religious dedication.

The remains of Waldeck Castle lie nearby, on Waldeck Castle Hill. The castle ruins were excavated and restored over the past 30 years. Information panels and an app tell the story of its eventful history; the hill offers wonderful views of the surrounding countryside.

Explore by bike or on foot

The approximately 40-kilometer Chapel Cycling Tour connects Tirschenreuth and Kemnath. It can be ridden along either of two routes through the Steinwald or the Waldnaab Valley. Along the way, the Theresien Chapel in Köglitz is one of the other chapels to discover. The tour’s length and two route options give you a concrete basis for planning; which option you choose depends on whether you prefer to travel through the Steinwald or the Waldnaab Valley.

Another route to follow is the Kemnath–Waldeck Route, Hiking Tour 2: from Schweißenreuth, a red circular marker leads in the direction of Köglitz. If you plan to hike this route, check the markings on site before setting off. This keeps the two different types of activity in view when planning: the longer cycling tour with two route options, and the marked hiking trail leading towards Köglitz.

Bread made with homegrown grain

The Heckenhof Robl in Köglitz is also part of the village’s character. There, organic bread is baked in a stone oven using grain grown on the farm, in a variety of styles. This offers a concrete glimpse of local production and a different focus from the chapel or the routes. If you would like to include the Heckenhof Robl in your travel plans, check current visiting arrangements in advance.
