Discover Zell im Fichtelgebirge
Accommodation in Zell im Fichtelgebirge
Zell im Fichtelgebirge is a state-recognized resort in the Fichtelgebirge Nature Park. The 877 m-high Großer Waldstein is located in the immediate vicinity of Zell; extensive high forests of the Waldstein range and a low mountain panorama define the landscape. Nature experiences and culture can be combined here in a variety of discoveries—from a forest nature trail to a summer park festival.
Views from the Waldstein and traces of history
The Arnstein rock formation lies nearby, on the northern slope of the Waldstein ridge. The roughly 30 m-high rock tower has an observation platform offering views of Zell and toward the Frankenwald. The Schüssel, the highest point of the Waldstein, also offers sweeping views over the surrounding countryside. Those interested in the area's history will find several notable sites on the Großer Waldstein: the castle ruins were inhabited by the Sparneck knights in the 14th century and were called the “Red Castle” because of their red bricks. The surviving sections of wall bear witness to their history. Before the path leading up to the ruins, the Teufelstisch rocks are shaped like a table. The historic bear trap was built around 1656 and is considered unique in the world.
Farm museum and local culture
The Dietelhof is a defining feature of the Upper Franconian Farm Museum in Kleinlosnitz: this four-sided farmstead with its thatched roof dates from the late 18th century. With its original furnishings, it is considered one of Upper Franconia's most valuable documents of rural architecture. Traditional crafts are still practiced there today to preserve the buildings. The Schupfen serves as the starting point for the museum's educational research trail; the Fichtelgebirge Nature Park information center is also located in the museum. Architectural history, traditional crafts and an appreciation of nature come together in one place. Every summer, the Zell amateur dramatics group holds the Park Festival in Zeller Park.
Trails and outdoor experiences
The forest nature trail starts at the Walpenreuth hiking car park. Its stations cover trees and the animal and plant life. The Humboldt Trail offers a different route: it is around 10 km long, starts in Zell's market square and passes a former quarry before climbing toward the summit of Haidberg. For cyclists, the first two stages of the Saale Cycle Route run from Zell im Fichtelgebirge to Blankenstein in Thuringia. The trails therefore differ in their stated starting points and routes. Fishing is the main activity at Reiterteich; benches provide a place to rest in the recreation area.
Choose the right base
When looking for accommodation in Zell, you can start by considering which experiences you want to shape your stay. The market square, as the starting point of the Humboldt Trail, the museum in Kleinlosnitz and Zeller Park offer different points of interest in the area. If you particularly want to visit the viewpoints and historic sites on the Großer Waldstein, take their location nearby into account as you plan. Check the specific location of your accommodation against your plans, so you can tailor your search to whether local culture, a nature trail, a cycling route or the Waldstein attractions are your priority.
