In Georgensgmünd, an accessible sculpture trail, evidence of Jewish life and a versatile leisure park come together. There is also a planet trail, a historic waterwheel that is still in operation, and distinctive buildings. This lets you explore outdoor art, local history and physical activity as different focuses of your stay.

Sculpture Trail and Leisure Park

The 2.4-kilometre-long sculpture trail leads past 15 works of art made from Jurassic limestone, steel and wood, from the “Am Bruckespan” leisure park towards Roth and on to Oberheckenhofen. The route follows a level footpath and cycle path. Its length, accessible design and combination of art and activity give the trail its distinctive character.

The public “Am Bruckespan” leisure park lies directly on the Franconian Rezat. Its facilities include a pavilion, swings, a beach volleyball court, a double zip line, a tunnel slide, a basketball court, a climbing wall, a play lawn, a sandpit, a baby slide and a boules court. In winter, there is also a natural ice-skating area; ice conditions may vary. While the sculpture trail offers a clearly defined route, the park brings together a range of play and sports activities in one place.

Jewish Heritage and Local History

A restored synagogue, a large Jewish cemetery and a Tahara house—the building used for ritual washing of the dead—form a fully preserved ensemble. Together, the three elements document the former Jewish religious life of the countryside. The former synagogue displays religious books, prayer straps (tefillin), prayer shawls (tallit katan) and other objects found in the genizah of Georgensgmünd.

The 7.5-kilometre-long planet trail takes up a different theme: it illustrates the relative sizes of the bodies in our solar system. Near the town hall, a gilded sun with a diameter of 1.4 metres also stands on a steel plinth. The historic waterwheel in Georgensgmünd is still in operation and recalls the industrial past of Friedrichsgmünd. The annual Waterwheel Festival takes place in early summer and is organised by local associations, with numerous attractions. Check the exact dates and programme for the year of your trip.

The Protestant Church of St. George also makes a striking architectural statement: its octagonal tower is covered with green-glazed tiles and is visible from afar as a landmark of the town.

Finding Your Way Around and Planning Your Stay

The central starting point for hiking trails in Georgensgmünd is the car park by the waterwheel, where there is ample parking for cars. Information boards about the hiking trails are also located by the waterwheel on the Rezat. This gives you a useful point of reference if you want to include hiking trails in your plans.
