Winterhausen: Local History and Routes along the Main
Accommodation in Winterhausen
Winterhausen can be explored on several levels: the historic town centre, the House of Local History and the routes along the Main each offer a different perspective. A stroll through picturesque lanes makes for a different day out than the 14-kilometre European Cultural Trail “Sun, Moon and Stones,” with its steep sections. There is also the preserved old ferry landing, which provides access to the Main for swimming and water sports. If you are planning a trip, you can first decide whether culture, the river or a longer walk will shape your stay.
Lanes, Town Hall and Local History
A walk through Winterhausen’s historic town centre takes you past notable buildings and architectural ensembles, and through picturesque lanes. The Town Hall is richly decorated in the Baroque style and was built in 1738; you can explore the former fortifications on foot along the Grabenrain flood protection embankment. Access conditions may vary at individual buildings. The local history association runs the House of Local History and organises exhibitions, guided tours and talks on Winterhausen’s history. The frequency and availability of the programme may vary.
By the Water and on the Cultural Trail
The preserved old ferry landing provides access to the Main for swimming and water sports. Observe local water safety conditions when taking part in these activities. The 14-kilometre European Cultural Trail “Sun, Moon and Stones” starts at the Winterhausen Main riverbank, passes Town Hall Square and St Nicholas Church, and climbs to the Mondguckerin viewpoint. Some sections are steep and require sturdy footwear; check trail conditions before setting off. A riverside activity at the landing and a longer walk with stops in the town and an ascent therefore make for quite different day plans.

The fully preserved ring of walls is about one and a half kilometres long; a walk can begin at the Main Gate, where flood markers are displayed. The Chapel of the Cross, locally known as “Kerchla,” was completed in 1661. St Nicholas Parish Church in Eibelstadt houses a Crucifixion group from the workshop of Tilman Riemenschneider, dating to around 1515. The Eibelstadt Local History Museum displays original stones from the Lügensteine. Directly on the Main, there is a three-hectare leisure and recreation area with a multi-purpose lawn, a large playground, a slackline, a picnic lawn and a boules court. A terroir-f viewpoint in the Eibelstadter Kapellenberg vineyard explains how to identify grape varieties and provides information about their history and production.
Align Your Accommodation Search with Your Travel Plans
A culture-focused visit centres on a tour of the town and the House of Local History; an active day calls for a different plan to cover the Cultural Trail’s 14 kilometres and steep sections. Swimming and water sports on the Main offer another choice of activity. Consider which experiences will actually shape your trip, and continue your accommodation search with those in mind.
