Obersteben can be explored via trails with different highlights: The Hirschhügel Trail leads through the village and then to the Wasserscheidenweg and Friedelhöhe; other hiking routes reach the Frankenwarte. There is also a historic site between Langenbach and Obersteben, as well as cycling tours with different routes. The Obersteben–Schwedenwacht–Friedelhöhe landscape is of particular importance for recreation in a natural setting.

Hiking with panoramic views

The Hirschhügel Trail US 32 leaves Bad Steben via the road to Obersteben and passes through the entire village. Just before the edge of the village, it turns right. After Obersteben, it leads to the Wasserscheidenweg and on to Friedelhöhe. Almost the entire route offers splendid panoramic views and impressive vistas in every direction.

The Jungbrunnen Trail HRW 1 reaches the Frankenwarte on the 679 m-high Hirschhügel. The Frankenwarte between Bad Steben and Geroldsgrün can be reached via various hiking trails and offers panoramic views of the hills bordering the Höllental, as well as of Lichtenberg and Bad Steben. The highlights described differ: panoramic views define almost the entire US 32 route, while the Frankenwarte is the stated destination of the HRW 1.

The Silla Trail and a historic trace

The Silla Trail US 33 is an easy 12.9 km hiking trail. The Silla site between Langenbach and Obersteben is a distinct historic highlight. It is associated with a former chapel; beside an old church path, a mound with a well rises from a meadow. Here, the former chapel and the mound with its well take centre stage, while the Frankenwarte is known for its panoramic views.

The route continues towards Obersteben along Route No. 5 of the Bad Steben bike network. Another regional cycling tour leads to Obersteben, passing colourful meadows and the Frankenwarte with its impressive panoramic views; the return route goes through the Seifengrund to Bad Steben. E-bike Tour 1 includes the road through Obersteben and Route No. 5, while the other tour includes the meadows, the Frankenwarte and the return route through the Seifengrund.
