Wartenfels brings together two very different interests: hiking opportunities maintained by the local hiking group, and a history that stretches from the medieval castle to the parish church. There are also architectural and archaeological monuments from several periods. When planning your trip, you can decide whether walking the trails, exploring historic architecture, or both will be the focus of your days.

Hiking with the Wartenfels Local Hiking Group

The Wartenfels local hiking group maintains 62 kilometres of trails across five different routes. The routes are marked in accordance with the strict guidelines of the German Hiking Association. Since 2015, the group has also maintained the FrankenwaldSteigla quality hiking trail “Rund um die Gaaßleitn” as part of the “Quality Region Wanderbares Deutschland: The Frankenwald” project.

The information highlights different aspects: 62 kilometres across five trails describes the overall extent and number of routes maintained; the FrankenwaldSteigla identifies a specific quality hiking trail and its place within a project. This lets you distinguish between the overall picture and a named route when planning.

Castle, Church and Architectural Monuments

Wartenfels Castle was built in 1327 by the knight Reiwin von Waldenfels and his sons Heinrich and Friedrich. In February 1444, Nuremberg troops captured the inadequately fortified castle, razed it and plundered it. The medieval castle site of Wartenfels is one of the town’s architectural and archaeological monuments.

The Catholic parish church of St Bartholomew stands centrally on Wartenfels’s market square and was consecrated in 1867. Its history is connected with the castle: the church was largely rebuilt using sandstone from the demolished ruins of Wartenfels Castle.

Other architectural and archaeological monuments include the Catholic cemetery chapel, dating from the mid-18th century. The rendered building has a slate-covered gable roof with a roof turret. A roof turret is a small, tower-like structure on a roof.

At the property at Wartenfels 7 stands a neo-Gothic rendered building with sandstone detailing, dating from 1859 to 1864. The so-called Schlossbauerhaus is a two-storey building with a half-hipped roof, sandstone detailing and the year 1850. A half-hipped roof has shortened, sloping roof sections at the gable ends.

Underground remains also form part of the historical picture: Wartenfels has foundations of medieval predecessor buildings of the parish church of St Bartholomew, as well as inhumation burials from the Middle Ages and the modern period. Together with the castle site, these monuments show that local history can be read not only in surviving buildings.

The Wider Destination of Presseck

The wider destination of Presseck offers further hiking and cultural experiences. The 21-kilometre Siebenfreund Trail is a circular hiking route around Presseck, named after Johann Jakob Siebenfreud. Its first section runs from Presseck via Heinersreuth, 3 Barone, Plusbaum and Elbersreuth and back to Presseck, and is 10.4 kilometres long. The two distances refer to different sections: 21 kilometres for the entire circular route and 10.4 kilometres for the first section.

The Church of the Holy Trinity is also in Presseck. During the summer months, it is open daily from 9 a.m. until about 6 p.m.; the parish offers guided tours in person. Check the current conditions before your visit.

The Audiotechnik Museum in Presseck aims to encourage attentive listening to high-quality music, including live music, and engagement with music beyond the mainstream. It also aims to rekindle a fascination with working with audio technology. This adds a musical theme to the hiking and architectural history that you can take into account when planning your trip to the wider destination.
