Bischofsreuth: Nature Trails and Cultural Landscape
Accommodation in Bischofsreuth
In Bischofsreuth, nature trails wind through a landscape shaped by historical land use. The Goldener Steig tells the story of medieval trade, the Flursteig brings traditional upland farming to life, and the Märchenwald (Fairy-Tale Forest) focuses on stories and play opportunities for children. This gives you a choice of different themes for your trip: historic trails, landscape and agriculture, or an outing to the Fairy-Tale Forest.
Following in the Footsteps of the Goldener Steig
The Goldener Steig nature trail begins in Bischofsreut and follows a medieval trade route towards Bohemia. It follows in the footsteps of the former packhorse traders and their horses. Its historical connection gives the trail its distinctive theme: it is not just a route, but also a reminder of the trade that once took place along it. Those interested in cultural history will find a tangible connection to it in the landscape here.
The Flursteig: Mountain Meadows, Forest Trails and Farming
The Flursteig nature trail loops around Bischofsreut through flowering mountain meadows and along forest trails. It showcases traditional farming practices typical of the region’s uplands. Landscape and cultural features along the route include one of the region’s last juniper heaths, home to rare animal and plant species; small historic field plots; and a water meadow with a meadow channel. Old, increasingly rare domestic animal breeds are another of the trail’s themes. On this walk, habitats and former farming practices are presented side by side.
Waldhufen and Regional History
In the Bischofsreut area, the basic layout of several Waldhufendörfer (strip-field villages), with their associated Waldhufenfluren (strip-field landscapes), has been preserved. Around 780 hectares of Bischofsreut’s Waldhufen were nominated as part of the Europe-wide Natura 2000 habitat network. Interactive museum trails lead to the highlights of the Bischofsreut Waldhufen. Together, these features tell the story of a shaped landscape and its historical structures, where nature and cultural themes cannot be separated.
Every May, a rogation procession takes place at St. Nepomuk Chapel, followed by an open-air church service. This recurring tradition offers another cultural point of interest for a stay in May.
Fairy-Tale Forest and Kneipp Facilities
The Bischofsreut Fairy-Tale Forest presents twelve traditional folk tales for children. The playground includes, among other things, a large wooden train that children can climb inside, a climbing house, picnic spots, barbecue areas and benches made from roots. The combination of fairy tales and various play and seating areas makes a visit a separate option alongside the nature trails.
The municipality of Haidmühle has seven Kneipp facilities fed by flowing streams, including some in Bischofsreut.
A Circular Hike to Schnellenzipf
A circular hiking trail near Bischofsreut leads to Schnellenzipf. It is seven kilometres long, has an elevation gain of 130 metres and takes about two hours. This gives you specific information on distance, elevation gain and timing for the hike. The LBV nature reserve at Schnellenzipf contains remnants of raised bog, wet meadows and mountain hay meadows. The hike and the habitats there offer another opportunity to experience nature in the surrounding area.

The 5 km-long Adalbert Stifter cross-country ski trail also starts in Haidmühle or Frauenberg. It is flat and very easy, following a former railway line. As its operation depends on winter conditions, it is advisable to check the latest conditions before setting out.
