Innernzell: Trails, water and a protected townscape
Accommodation in Innernzell
Innernzell combines outdoor activities with a pond set in the landscape and a bathing beach, as well as a protected townscape along the main street. The mix of trails, water and a heritage-protected streetscape offers various starting points for planning your trip.
Hiking in summer and winter
The 2er circular hiking trail starts right in Innernzell. In addition, numerous signposted trails invite you to hike in both summer and winter. This gives you both a specific starting point for a named circular hike and a hiking theme that spans the seasons.
Water and sports facilities
A pond set in the landscape with a bathing beach offers a different kind of experience from the hiking trails. There is also a tennis court and other sports facilities for ball sports and endurance training. There are indoor and outdoor swimming pools in the surrounding area of Innernzell, too. When planning your trip, you can decide whether hiking, spending time by the water or sports on the courts matters most to you. The pools should be considered facilities in the surrounding area, not part of Innernzell itself.
A protected ensemble along the main street
The protected Hauptstraße ensemble shows another side of the village: it comprises two rows of houses on either side of the through road. This means the heritage-protected feature is not just a single house, but the streetscape formed by its two rows of houses. If you would like to include the townscape in your choice of destination as well as activities, this offers a specific point of interest in Innernzell.
Nature and culture in Freyung-Grafenau
Freyung-Grafenau broadens the picture with regional nature and cultural attractions. The Bavarian Forest National Park extends into the district of Freyung-Grafenau and opened on 7 October 1970 as Germany’s first national park. On the 2024 zoning map, 75.37 percent of the national park area is designated as natural zones. Freyung-Grafenau is also located at the tripoint of Bavaria, Bohemia and Austria.
The Wildbachklamm Buchberger Leite gorge offers a striking landscape. Steep rocky ridges force the boulder-strewn, cascading Wolfsteiner Ohe into a deeply confined channel; remnants of primeval forest have survived in the gorge’s moss- and fern-rich woodlands. An eight-kilometre themed hiking trail, with information boards and an accompanying brochure, runs through the Buchberger Leite between Freyung and Ringelai. Historic timber-floating walls, tunnels cut into the rock and surface canals bear witness to centuries of human activity there.
Cultural destinations in the region
In Freyung stands the Schramlhaus, built around 1700. Today it is the town’s oldest farmstead and, in its original condition, one of the oldest in the district of Freyung-Grafenau. The house contains more than a hundred original examples of reverse glass painting, a form of sacred folk art. The Wolfstein Local History Museum is also housed in the Schramlhaus.
Near Neuschönau in the district of Freyung-Grafenau, the treetop walk is part of the Lusen National Park Centre. The wildlife enclosure gives visitors the opportunity to learn about the national park and its native wildlife. Its circular paths are suitable for small children who cannot yet manage long distances. The Gabreta Archaeological Adventure Park features buildings reconstructed from examples of original Celtic structures, symbolising Celtic finds discovered on the hill of Paul Freund. Guided tours about Celtic life can also be booked there.
The village is defined by its directly rooted hiking, water and townscape themes; the wider regional setting encompasses additional nature and cultural themes.
