Jandelsbrunn offers plenty of ways to spend your days cycling, walking, by the water and exploring its history. The Adalbert Stifter Cycle Path passes through the town, another cycle route can be continued south from here, and a signposted hiking trail starts at the town hall. There is also Poppenreut Golf Course and the pilgrimage church on Wollaberg. These different themes give your travel plans a range of focuses—from a cycling route to regional culture.

Cycling Routes and Hiking Destination

The Adalbert Stifter Cycle Path runs from Röhrnbach via Waldkirchen, Jandelsbrunn and Neureichenau to Haidmühle, where it connects to the Danube-Ilz Cycle Path. From Jandelsbrunn, you can continue south toward Obernzell along the Danube-Moldau Cycle Path. The two routes offer different ways to explore: one passes through a series of towns before reaching Haidmühle, while the other heads south from Jandelsbrunn toward Obernzell.

If you prefer to explore on foot, a signposted hiking trail leads from Jandelsbrunn town hall to the Bibererlebnispfad Steinerfurth (beaver discovery trail). The route is 3.8 kilometres long, with an estimated walking time of one hour and ten minutes. The beaver discovery trail is also one of Jandelsbrunn’s attractions. This gives you a choice for your day’s plans between a longer cycling connection and a clearly designated walking route with a specific destination.

Recreation Lake and Poppenreut Golf Course

The recreation lake is close to town and has parking, changing rooms and restroom facilities. There is also a children’s playground and a beach volleyball court. There is no lifeguard service. In winter, weather permitting, curling on ice is possible when the ice is thick enough; this activity therefore depends on the stated ice conditions.

Designed by Keith Preston, Poppenreut Golf Course is an 18-hole tournament course in the municipality of Jandelsbrunn. It offers a sporting challenge for both beginners and experienced players. The facilities include a driving range with covered tees, a putting green and a practice bunker. If you would like to include golf in your travel plans, you will find the game on the course as well as the practice facilities described here.

Church History and Regional Discoveries

The pilgrimage church on Wollaberg dates back to the 13th century. Over the years, it burned down and was rebuilt. Its history offers a different focus from the cycling and recreational activities: it reaches far back into the past and is one of the historical themes you can explore during a stay in Jandelsbrunn.

In the Wider Freyung-Grafenau Destination

Freyung-Grafenau also offers its own nature and cultural attractions. The Bavarian Forest National Park extends into Freyung-Grafenau district and opened on 7 October 1970 as Germany’s first national park. According to the 2024 zoning map, 75.37 percent of its area is classified as natural zones.

In the Buchberger Leite wild-stream gorge, steep rock barriers force the boulder-strewn, cascading Wolfsteiner Ohe into a narrow channel. Remnants of primeval forest remain in the gorge’s moss- and fern-rich woodlands. An eight-kilometre themed hiking trail, with information panels and an accompanying booklet, runs through the Buchberger Leite between Freyung and Ringelai. Historic timber-floating walls, tunnels hewn into the rock and above-ground canals tell the story of centuries of human activity. Nature and cultural history are closely intertwined along this regional hiking route.

In Freyung stands the Schramlhaus, built around 1700. Today, it is the oldest rural homestead in the town and, in its original condition, one of the oldest in Freyung-Grafenau district. Its collection includes more than one hundred original examples of reverse glass painting, an art form classified as sacred folk art. The Wolfstein Local History Museum is also housed in the Schramlhaus. This historic homestead, folk art and museum add to the natural attractions of the wider destination.

The Treetop Walk is part of the Lusen National Park Centre near Neuschönau in Freyung-Grafenau district. The wildlife enclosure is also near Neuschönau in Freyung-Grafenau district. At the wildlife enclosure, visitors can learn about the national park and its native wildlife. The circular trails are also suitable for young children who are not yet able to walk long distances—a specific option for families looking for shorter walks.

The Gabreta Archaeological Experience Park features buildings reconstructed from original Celtic structures, symbolically representing Celtic artefacts found on the hill of Paul Freund. The visitor program includes bread baking; expert-guided tours about Celtic life can also be booked. Program details may change. Gabreta offers another regional focus, this time on archaeology and Celtic life.

Freyung-Grafenau is located at the tripoint of Bavaria, Bohemia and Austria. For your selection, this means that Jandelsbrunn’s cycling routes, recreational activities and church history can be explored as distinct themes, while the nature and cultural attractions in Freyung-Grafenau offer additional topics within the wider destination.
