Klais: Discover Roman Traces and Walking Routes
Accommodation in Klais
Klais combines visible traces of Roman times with historic walks and seasonal activities. At the eastern edge of the village, history comes to life on a walkable section of the Via Raetia; cycling and cross-country skiing add further highlights. The experiences you want to shape your stay can also help you choose a search location for accommodation.
Roman Traces and Monastery History
At the eastern edge of Klais, you can see and walk along a partially excavated section of the Roman Via Raetia. The section is dated to around 200 AD. Still-visible wheel ruts left by ancient vehicles bring the old road to life: as you walk, you encounter a tangible detail of its history.
Excavations of the Via Raetia in Klais also uncovered remains of a Benedictine monastery associated with Scharnitz. Its existence is documented for the period from June 29, 763, to 772; a bronze plaque commemorates the monastery. The village’s history thus encompasses both the Roman road and the memory of the monastery.
Experience History on Walks
An easy historic walk leads from Klais along the Roman road in the direction of Elmau. The local tourism association also promotes a walk in the village dedicated to the history of Klais. The two options have different focuses: the route along the road leads toward Elmau, while the walk in the village centers on local history.
Cycling and Cross-Country Skiing by Season
You can cycle from Klais toward Kranzbach and Elmau, with views of the Wetterstein Mountains along the way. Longer extensions lead toward Ferchensee and Lautersee. Route conditions can vary by season, so it is worth planning according to the time of year.
In winter, Klais offers cross-country skiing, including the Klais–Kaltenbrunn loop. Whether cross-country skiing is possible depends on the snow and seasonal trail conditions. This also means cycling and cross-country skiing require different planning: the ski loop depends on winter conditions.
Train Station and Accommodation Search
Klais train station was built in 1912 and sits at an elevation of 933 meters. From there, you can explore the visible Roman road and nearby walking trails. If you plan to travel by train, it is best to check current transport connections in advance.
When choosing a search location, it helps to focus on the activities you want to experience.
More Experiences in Krün
In Krün, Barmsee is a swimming lake; on its northwest shore, a sunbathing lawn offers views of the mountains of the Alpenwelt Karwendel. Swimming is one of the summer activities here. Also in Krün, St. Sebastian’s Church is worth a visit; its interior features understated Rococo ornamentation.
Krün offers walking routes of varying lengths. The Isar Nature Adventure Trail is an easy, 7.4-kilometer loop that starts and ends in the village center. Themed areas and interactive stations provide playful insights into the habitat and nature in and around the Isar. A very easy, 3.2-kilometer hike leads from the village center to the Maria Rast Chapel and through the hummocky meadows near Krün. It is therefore shorter than the Isar Nature Adventure Trail loop.
The Krün Farmers’ Theatre brings young and old alike to laughter with comedies in the Bavarian dialect.
