Churches, Art and Local Traditions

The parish church of St. Nicholas was built in Übersee between 1902 and 1904 in the neo-Gothic style and is also known as the “Cathedral of the Achental”. The church of St. Peter and Paul on Westerbuchberg contains valuable medieval wall frescoes dating from the 14th and 15th centuries. The Leonhardi Church in Almau is a former pilgrimage church dedicated to St. Leonhard and is considered one of the oldest churches in the Achental.

A local tradition also tells of the Nikolaus Chapel on the Feldwieser Peninsula: it is said to have been built in 1808 by a resident who had previously been rescued from danger on Lake Chiemsee. The story is part of local tradition. The Exter Art House in Übersee presents works by Julius Exter and Chiemsee painters, adding a distinct artistic focus alongside the church architecture and frescoes.
