Gauting invites you to plan a trip around more than one theme: its landscape, traces of history, cycling and cultural events offer a variety of ways to explore. The history of the landscape is particularly easy to see in the Mühltal. The valley is a gorge up to 60 metres deep, carved by the Würm River through the terminal moraines of the last Ice Age.

Landscape and geological history

In the Grubmühler Feld north of Gauting, a floodplain of the Würm lies between old moraine ridges. Visible terraces formed during the Würm glaciation. The gorge, floodplain and terraces offer different perspectives on landforms shaped by the Ice Age. If you are interested in the landscape and how it was formed, these places give your trip a distinct focus.

Historical traces and architecture

At the Lederersteg, the mill wheel is the drive mechanism of a paper mill dating from 1878. The Reismühle adds an older ownership history: it is recorded as belonging to the ducal estate in 1281. A local legend also describes the Reismühle as the birthplace of Charlemagne—explicitly a legend, not a verified historical fact.

The churches also reflect different periods of construction. The Frauenkirche was built in 1449 on the site of an earlier predecessor; its interior furnishings date from the 16th to the 18th century. The Protestant Christ Church was built in 1928 to plans by the architect Theodor Fischer. An exhibition at Gauting Town Hall, presented by the State Archaeological Collection, displays finds from the town’s prehistoric and early history. Before your visit, check whether the exhibition is open on the date you plan to go.

The park belonging to Schloss Fußberg is open to the public, and the Würm flows through it. This makes it easy to combine a visit to the park with a view of the river. As access conditions may change, it is advisable to check the latest information before visiting.

Cycling, events and the summer swimming pool

For cyclists, the Via Julia is a good point of departure: it passes through Gauting and is signposted along a route of approximately 280 kilometres. This length is a guide; check the signage and route conditions before setting out. You can include the Via Julia in your plans for a cycling trip through Gauting.

The bosco Bürger- und Kulturhaus Gauting provides space for cultural events, celebrations, talks and conferences. Which events suit your trip depends on the programme at the time. On warm days, there is also the municipal outdoor summer swimming pool. It operates seasonally, so check the season and admission details before your visit.

Accommodation and travel planning

The S-Bahn connects Gauting with Munich and Tutzing. If you are considering Gauting as a place to stay overnight, you can factor this connection into your plans alongside the landscape, culture and cycling. Check the timetable for your travel dates.

Your interests can also vary throughout your trip: the landscape and geology offer a different focus from the churches, the Reismühle or an event. The summer swimming pool adds a seasonal option. If you plan to visit the exhibition, attend an event or go cycling, it is worth checking the relevant dates or conditions in advance.
