Discover Oberoberndorf through its buildings, the course of the Aspach stream and its lively festival traditions. Listed architecture here ranges from a chapel and a fountain to historic houses. There is also a hiking route to Maria Frieden Monastery and events with specific dates—several ways to plan your trip.

Chapel, fountain and historic houses

The Bavarian list of historic monuments dated 28 November 2025 includes several protected buildings in Oberoberndorf. These include the Chapel of Our Lady of Lourdes: the hall-style building has a gabled roof and a gable turret with exposed sandstone. The recessed choir ends in a five-sided apse. The Lorenz Fountain is also listed. Its fountain chamber is made of sandstone blocks from the early 19th century.

At Oberoberndorf 7, there is a wayside shrine dating from around 1900. A niche structure with a semicircular roof sits on a sandstone pillar. Another example of early 19th-century architecture is the two-storey residential and farm building at Oberoberndorf 12: its ground floor is solid and plastered, while the upper floor is timber-framed; the building has a gabled roof.

The former brewery at Oberoberndorf 20 represents an earlier period. This two-storey half-timbered building with a half-hipped roof dates from the 18th century. Its rear extension with a brick chimney was added in the 19th century. Together, the fountain, wayside shrine and houses showcase different materials, architectural styles and dates. As you look at the buildings, you can compare details rather than simply ticking off individual sights.

The Aspach and finding your way through the landscape

The Aspach stream rises in Oberoberndorf and flows through the village. From there, it runs past Kirchschletten to Zapfendorf and eventually into the Main. The row of apple trees also serves as a landmark in the landscape: it makes the route from Oberoberndorf towards Hofhölzer easy to follow.

Further afield, the highly visible Windischletten lime tree stands on the municipal boundary between Windischletten and Oberoberndorf. The tree grows on a grassland area belonging to the town of ScheĂźlitz and is listed as a cultural and historical monument. It is therefore a destination to look out for beyond the village boundary, though it is not itself part of Oberoberndorf.

There is also a specific hiking connection to the village: Maria Frieden Monastery, a pilgrims’ hostel in Kirchschletten, can be reached via a local hiking trail through Oberoberndorf. The stated distance is 5 km. If you plan to take this route, check the trail directions before your hike.

Kirchweih, apple market and storytelling tradition

Oberoberndorf’s Kirchweih celebrations include the Hahnenschlag (a traditional game involving a suspended pot) and a climbing tree with sweets for children. The Kirchweih in honour of Our Lady of Lourdes falls on Mother’s Day, or the second Sunday in May. Check the date for the relevant year before you travel. The Oberoberndorf-Kirchschletten-Reuthlos Fruit and Horticultural Association lists an apple market on the first Sunday in October; check the annual programme for this event too before your trip.

Another local tradition is the tale of the “Gruäßtunnern”. According to Oberoberndorf folklore, farmers lit cigars while passing through Schweißdorf and Kirchschletten. After leaving the villages, they extinguished the cigars on wooden telephone poles to save money. This story is part of local storytelling tradition, alongside the architectural landmarks and festival dates—not a verified historical account.
