Schwaig can be discovered through a variety of experiences: St. Korbinian Parish Church tells the story of a distinctive construction process, while recurring village festivals shape the calendar. There is also a weekly opportunity to try stock sport. When choosing accommodation, it is therefore worth considering whether your trip will be shaped more by architecture, a particular festival date or an activity.

St. Korbinian: a church with a story of its own

St. Korbinian Parish Church in Schwaig is the only church in the district dedicated to the diocesan patron saint, St. Korbinian. The present church was built to plans by Munich architect Johann Schott: construction began on 15 April 1903, and the church was consecrated on 25 June 1905. The building dates from the late Neo-Romanesque period. One remarkable detail in its history is the former building: the old chapel was incorporated into the church as a sacristy. As a result, the church is not oriented eastward. Visitors can thus take in both its stylistic classification and a tangible consequence of the older building.

Village festivals on different dates

The Schwaig Bürgerfest has been held every year on the third weekend in June since it was first established in 1979. For the past few years, it has lasted two days, from Saturday to Sunday. It is open to the residents of the village, guests from the municipality and all other visitors. Another date in the annual calendar is the raising of the maypole, which all the village’s clubs take part in; it takes place every four years. Every year on Christmas Eve, after the church’s Mettn service, mulled wine is served in Schwaig’s village square. These occasions offer different focal points for planning a trip: a public Bürgerfest in June, a Christmas celebration and a tradition that takes place every four years.

The Midnight Ball is also part of local club life. It is a traditional summer tournament for BBQ teams. It takes place on the Saturday before the last day of school before the Bavarian summer holidays. It does not have a fixed calendar date, so the relevant school holiday calendar is key to planning.

Try stock sport for yourself

If you would like to plan an activity alongside church architecture and festival dates, you can try a training session with the stock sport section of FC Sportfreunde 1913 Schwaig e.V. Sessions take place every Tuesday from 7 pm at the Schwaig stock sport hall. Visitors are welcome to give the sport a try; training stocks are provided. This regular weekly event offers a different way to experience Schwaig than its annual and multi-yearly village festivals.

St. George’s Church in Oberding is described as historically significant in terms of art and features Baroque and Rococo furnishings. The municipality of Oberding also has a multi-generational fitness park for residents and visitors; it can be reached on foot, by bicycle or by car.

For an excursion on two wheels, the “Ring der Regionen” cycling route passes through the airport and Oberding on its way back to Erding. SkulpTour III features wooden sculptures created in the summer of 2017 during the third and final International Woodcarving Symposium in Oberding.
