Schwabhausen combines traces of the town’s history with places for leisure and seasonal nature themes. Highlights include the remains of a Celtic hilltop enclosure, the memory of Pope Pius VI, a chessboard between the town hall and market square, and several facilities at the sports complex. Together, they offer different perspectives for a stay: history, exercise and a view of nature throughout the year.

Planning your stay

Schwabhausen and the district of Arnbach are both on the S2 S-Bahn line between Altomünster and Dachau. If you plan to travel by train, check the current timetable before your trip, as services and times may change. This lets you take the train into account when planning your stay without confusing it with local history and leisure interests.

Church, Celtic hilltop enclosure and local history

St. Michael is Schwabhausen’s parish church. The remains of a Celtic hilltop enclosure lie northwest of the church and attest to Celtic settlement in the area. This settlement activity is dated to approximately 500 to 15 BC. The town’s history therefore reaches far back; the church also provides a specific point of reference for locating the prehistoric remains.

A commemorative plaque at the present-day “Zur Post” inn recalls the official farewell to Pope Pius VI in Schwabhausen. The “Obern Tafern,” now the Gasthof zur Post, was once the most important place for travellers to stop in town. The two references tell different sides of local history: one recalls a specific event, the other an inn’s former role as a place for travellers.

Chessboard and sports complex

A life-size chessboard, installed in 2018, stands between the town hall and market square. You can use it free of charge and without booking in advance; the code for the chess pieces is available from the municipal administration.

The sports complex at Jahnstraße 5 includes the “Heinrich-Loder-Halle” sports hall. The complex also has a beach volleyball court, facilities for bowls and boccia, a five-a-side football pitch and a pump track. The locations are distinct: the chessboard stands on its own between the town hall and market square, while several sports facilities are grouped together on Jahnstraße. This can help you find your way if you plan to enjoy different activities during your stay.

Nature throughout the year

Every year from February, lapwings return to the municipality of Schwabhausen. The males court females with spectacular displays in flight and loud “Kie-witt!” calls. During the breeding season, stay on the paths and avoid disturbing them.

A wildflower meadow is being created in the green corridor between Mohnblumenstraße and Blumenstraße. A total of 240 flower bulbs were planted there, and in spring you can see daffodils, crocuses and snowdrops. These two nature themes mark different seasons: lapwings return from February, while the flowers appear in spring.

Another landmark is the field path leading into Schwabhausen’s flower district and ending at Kornblumenstraße.

Plan your stay around your interests

When choosing accommodation, you can first decide which aspects matter for your stay: travel on the S2, historic sites, or the leisure and nature themes mentioned above. That way, you can choose a starting point for your stay based on the interests that actually matter to you.
