Discover Unterschleißheim: History, Remembrance and Activity
Accommodation in Unterschleißheim
Unterschleißheim offers several different reasons to stay: city history, places of remembrance, the Valentinsquelle spring, as well as swimming and climbing facilities. This lets you focus your plans on different interests rather than centring your trip on a single theme. Whether you prioritise rail connections, cultural stops or active pursuits also affects which location matters to you as a starting point. The places and details below offer specific pointers to help you decide.
The S1 as a guide to choosing your location
The S1 serves the Unterschleißheim and Lohhof stops. It goes directly to Feldmoching, where you can connect to the U2, as well as to Munich Central Station and Ostbahnhof. Munich Airport, Marienplatz and the city of Freising are also reachable in about 20 minutes from the Unterschleißheim and Lohhof S1 stops. This is an approximate guide; check the timetable and connections for your travel date. The two stops give you a practical question to consider when choosing accommodation: which rail journeys should take priority in your plans? These connections may be a decisive factor if you want to combine destinations in Munich or Freising with a stay in Unterschleißheim.
City History and Remembrance
The Unterschleißheim City Museum presents history and art across around 200 m² of exhibition space. The memorial immediately next to the Fach- und Berufsoberschule commemorates the fate of forced labourers with four flax fields and seven portrait steles. The 500-metre Path of Remembrance connects the memorial with the learning centre. At the Flachsröste Lohhof place of remembrance, a stele with a QR code provides access to a virtual reconstruction of the flax roasting facility, as well as historical information and photographs.
Another historic ensemble is formed by the Old Church of St. Ulrich and the “Alter Wirt” inn to its north: together, they still form the centre of the former farming village of Unterschleißheim. The museum, place of remembrance and church offer different perspectives if you are interested in art, local history and commemorating forced labour.
Spring, Climbing Facility and Swimming
The “Valentinsquelle” spring is located in Valentinspark on the southern edge of Unterschleißheim and bubbles up from a depth of almost 2,000 metres. Following a medical and balneological assessment, it was officially recognised as a therapeutic spring in 2016. The spring thus links a specific spot in the park with a remarkable story.
A large climbing facility was completed in early summer 2024 in Rolf-Zeitler-Park, formerly known as Valentinspark. Colourful tree trunks, wooden ladders, a rope bridge and a net tunnel invite visitors to balance, crawl, swing and climb. As individual features may change during maintenance, check the current facilities if you are planning a visit.
The aquariush Badewelt in Unterschleißheim has a 25-metre swimming pool with six lanes. If swimming is one of your plans, you can make it a separate focus of your trip. Before visiting, it is advisable to check the Badewelt’s latest operating information.
