Discover Gremsdorf
Accommodation in Gremsdorf
Gremsdorf brings together a historic landmark and a specific destination along the way. The Amtshaus tells the story of a former administrative function; a detour takes you to the Litz Mill.
Local history and the route to the Litz Mill
Until 1826, the Höchstadt district court was housed in Gremsdorf’s Amtshaus. From the Gremsdorf Kloster bus stop, a detour leads to the Litz Mill. This lets you take two different interests into account when planning your trip: a chapter of local history that can be dated, and a route leading to a mill.
Nature trails in the wider Erlangen-Höchstadt destination
If you want to explore more of the wider Erlangen-Höchstadt destination, you can choose nature trails by length, landscape and theme. A three-kilometre circular trail passes through the Kalchreuth cherry orchards. Information boards cover cherries, the surrounding landscape and Kalchreuth; hands-on stations focus on nature topics.
Near Höchstadt, three trails each have a different character. The marked, level Eisvogelweg (Kingfisher Trail) is about 2.6 kilometres long and passes through the Franconian pond country. The approximately 2.2-kilometre Orchideenweg (Orchid Trail) is a route for vehicles and pedestrians through a cultural landscape with reed-fringed ponds, wet meadows, numerous waterbirds and orchids such as the broad-leaved helleborine. The mostly level Seerosenweg (Water Lily Trail) covers about 2.4 kilometres through the historic Gretelmark woodland; woodland ponds, water lilies, bulrushes and kingfishers shape the scenery along the way. This gives you a choice of different highlights: cherry orchards, wetlands or woodland ponds. At three kilometres, the Kalchreuth circular trail is slightly longer than the three trails near Höchstadt.
Protected landscapes also give the region its own nature profile. The “Vogelfreistätte Weihergebiet bei Mohrhof” nature reserve is an Important Bird Area and one of the early Natura 2000 Habitats and Birds Directive sites. Rare bird species, wetlands and orchid-rich hay meadows are among its features. North of the Höchstadt district of Bösenbechhofen, the Bösenbechhofen ponds form a chain of ponds in Gretelmark woodland, fed by rainwater. An area of 23.06 hectares, together with the surrounding habitats, was designated a nature reserve on 15 December 2012.
Museums, architectural history and guided tours
The Spix Museum in Höchstadt is located in the birthplace of naturalist Johann Baptist Ritter von Spix. Interactive exhibits tell the story of his life and the history of the house where he was born. A computer-controlled, light-operated rainforest diorama with animal depictions and animal sounds is especially recommended for children. St. Andrew’s Church in Kalchreuth houses a famous Passion altarpiece: a carved altarpiece with hinged wings by Michael Wolgemut, Dürer’s teacher.
In Höchstadt, the castle and town tower offer insights into different periods of construction. The castle contains the foundations of a tower measuring twelve by twelve metres, dating from the early 13th century; its walls are three metres thick. The castle took on its present form around 1714. The surviving town tower dates from the 14th century: as a gate tower, it forms part of the second of three town-wall or fortification rings and is considered a landmark of the town. Historical town tours are offered in Höchstadt, as well as guided tours of the cellars in Höchstadt and the surrounding area. If you plan to join a tour, check the dates in advance.
Pond farming and regional cuisine
Regional specialities can also influence when you travel. In Höchstadt a.d.Aisch, Aischgrund mirror carp from the surrounding Himmelsteiche ponds and the various ways it is prepared are among the local specialities. Its season runs from September to April, the months with an “R” in their German names; the product also has Protected Geographical Indication status. The region’s attractions thus range from nature trails and protected wetlands to architectural history, museums and seasonal cuisine.
