Grafenried: Hiking Trails, Nature Trail and Village Chapel
Accommodation in Grafenried
The European long-distance hiking trail E6 reaches Grafenried along comfortable forest paths; from here it climbs through mixed forests to Burgstall, gaining 430 meters in elevation. The Marienkapelle stands on the village green, and the Asbachtal nature experience trail focuses on nature and landscape topics. This makes it easy to plan your trip around specific interests: hiking trails and nature in Grafenried, or also excursions and cultural destinations in the wider Drachselsried area.
Nature and orientation in Grafenried
The Asbachtal nature experience trail is designated as a nature experience trail. Its information boards cover nature and the landscape along the Asbach, as well as the habitats of hedgerows, meadows and pastures. Other topics include nature-friendly forestry, the otter and the cultural landscape. If you’d like to take in more than just the route, you’ll find ideas here for exploring the trail’s landscape and nature topics.
Grafenried also has a municipal hiking trail overview map. In the wider Drachselsried area, the hiking trail overview maps explain routes and trail markers, point out notable facilities and tourist attractions, and offer recommendations for a nature-friendly stay in the forest and hiking area. The local map and the information about the Drachselsried hiking network therefore offer different points of reference for planning.
Hiking trails with different destinations
The Asbachtal adventure hiking trail reaches Grafenried and then follows the red Dr 58 circular trail along Kapellenweg to GabelbrĂĽcke. Another hiking route takes you back via Frath and Asbach: the red Dr 59 trail passes Fritz-Kapelle to Grafenried, then continues from there on the red Dr 58 to Drachselsried.
A hiking route leads from HaufenmĂĽhle up a narrow path to Grafenried. It then follows the blue Dr 3 markers to the Frath plateau, which takes about 45 minutes to reach. Frath is the named destination on this tour; on the E6, by contrast, the focus is on the climb from Grafenried through mixed forests to Burgstall, gaining 430 meters in elevation. The different destinations and trail markers help you choose a route that suits your preferred itinerary.
Cycling: two moderately difficult tours
There are also two specific options for choosing a cycling route. The moderately difficult Drachselsried Höhenrunde is 30.5 kilometers long. It passes Berghütte Schareben, Riedlberg, Mais, Frath and Grafenried before returning to its starting point in Drachselsried. The also moderately difficult Zellertal Tour covers 32 kilometers: it runs from Arnbruck via Drachselsried, Oberried, Riedlberg, Bodenmais and Böbrach, then via Frath and Grafenried back to Arnbruck. Both tours pass through Grafenried; the stated distances and sequence of places make them easy to compare.
Chapel on the village green
The Marienkapelle stands on the village green in Grafenried. It was built under the direction of the Grafenried village association, with the support of its members and the local community, and was solemnly consecrated in September. Since then, a Mass has been held there each year to mark the anniversary. Alongside the hiking trails, this gives the village green its own cultural point of interest and connects the village with a recurring local tradition.
Drachselsried as a wider travel context
The hiking network in the wider Drachselsried area comprises 17 point-to-point trails and 21 circular trails. The blue-marked Dr 1 trail, a Goldsteig access route, starts at the Drachselsried Tourist Information Office and climbs to the Schareben forest clearing at an elevation of 1,000 meters. The Goldsteig section along the municipalities of Arnbruck and Drachselsried runs between the Kaitersberg massif and GroĂźer Arber. In the wider area around Grafenried, around 75 percent of the municipality of Drachselsried is forested; most of these forest areas lie within the Bavarian Forest Nature Park.
Cultural attractions also broaden the picture. Drachselsrieder Kirwa is a four-day church fair held on the last weekend in August, traditionally beginning on Friday evening with a brass band concert in the village square. The Herrmann Glass Gallery presents a private collection of 1970s studio glass and international glass art. It includes more than 1,000 objects by 150 artists from over 30 countries; visits and guided tours of the collection are free.
At the Fuchs glass studio, animal figures are made from colorful glass rods over an open flame, and visitors can watch the process. Demonstrations take place Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to noon. If you’d like to include an event or demonstration in your travel plans, check the dates and times in advance. When searching for accommodation, you can first decide what you’d like to focus on: hiking trails and nature in Grafenried, or also the hiking and cultural offerings in Drachselsried.
