Kollnburg: Castle, Trails and Nature
Accommodation in Kollnburg
Castle ruins, hiking trails and viewpoints give Kollnburg its distinctive character: you can explore the town’s landmark, learn about the route of a historic packhorse trail, or choose from nature-themed experiences, scenic views and art. This mix is useful when planning your trip, as each experience offers a different focus.
Castle and views with specific points of interest
The castle tower, with its castle well and courtyard, is Kollnburg’s landmark. The castle ruins are defined by an 11-metre-high round tower and a castle well around 20 metres deep. These two striking features of the site stand side by side, each with very different dimensions.
Climb the castle tower and look out towards the highest mountain peaks in the Bavarian Forest. A viewpoint is also one of the highlights along the Burgstallweg trail: at its highest point, a group of rocks with an impressive wooden cross is known locally as the “Liebesfelsen” (Lovers’ Rock). From there, the view stretches across the forest landscape to the Arber.
Kastenstein offers a different perspective. The rock stands around 822 metres high, and from there you can see Kollnburg and the surrounding Bavarian Forest mountains. By including the viewpoints in your trip plans, you can enjoy two different views: from the Liebesfelsen across the forest landscape to the Arber, and from Kastenstein towards the town and the mountains around it.
Trails linking the village, history and nature
The Burgstallweg trail crosses Kollnburger Berg through the site of the prehistoric hillfort and connects the upper and lower parts of the village. It is a section of the Baierweg, one of the oldest packhorse trails in the Bavarian Forest. The Burgstallweg starts at Schulstraße 14; if you need to find the exact trailhead, check the route locally. The trail thus links the village districts with a specific connection to the site’s early history.
For nature education and exercise, the Laufkäferweg trail is another option: its 13 stops focus on outdoor activity, nature education and experiencing nature with all the senses. These stops give the trail its own thematic focus, while the Burgstallweg passes through the site of the prehistoric hillfort.
The Pröller panoramic circular trail starts and ends at the church square in Kollnburg. It follows the “Kollnburger Pröllersteig” nature trail. Information boards along the way tell you about the flora and fauna, as well as the forest and cultural landscape. This means that both the starting and finishing point in town and the surrounding natural features help you find your way around the loop.
Art, contemplation and a special visit
Art and nature also come together in Kollnburg: the “Painted Forest” art project combines the two along a hiking trail around one kilometre long, which forms part of the Baierweg. Its approximate length helps you include this section of trail as a separate part of your plans, without confusing it with the entire Burgstallweg.
The “Words of Life” offer a reflective touch. At marked locations, glass panels and glass spheres guide you to this place for reflection and meditation. Alongside the trails and viewpoints, you can also visit places with an explicitly contemplative character.
If you are interested in motorcycles, you can visit the motorcycle collection at Wurzelhaus, Sedlhofer StraĂźe 20, 94262 Kollnburg, by prior appointment only. If you plan to visit, arrange a time with the operator in advance.
When looking for accommodation in Kollnburg, you can start with the experiences that matter to you: the castle and its views, nature education at the trail stops, or art and contemplation each offer a different focus. Consider which themes you want your trip to centre on before choosing your accommodation.
