Oberthulba can be explored through two distinct themes: the 10.6-kilometre Thulbataler Extratour and traces of historic architecture and local heritage. When planning your trip, you can weigh up nature and local history, or make room for both interests.

Hiking and nature along the Thulba

The Thulbataler Extratour starts at the market square in Oberthulba. From the “Zum Hellbach” bus stop, an unmarked footpath of about 200 metres leads to the starting point. Check bus services before travelling and current trail conditions before setting out. Since the connecting path is unmarked, finding your way between the bus stop and the market square is also part of your preparations.

The route includes a quiet stretch of woodland running directly alongside the Thulba. It lies within the UNESCO Rhön Biosphere Reserve and the “Core Zones in the Bavarian Part of the Rhön Biosphere Reserve” nature reserve. The riverside woodland and the two protected-area designations give the hiking theme a distinct landscape setting. You can factor the 10.6-kilometre distance into your day’s plans; you should also check current trail conditions. This gives you a clearly defined focus on nature and hiking alongside Oberthulba’s historic sites when choosing your activities.

Architectural history and traces of local heritage

Different building phases can be distinguished at the Catholic parish church of St. John: the church tower dates from 1464, its upper storey was added in 1608 under Julius Echter, and the present-day church building was constructed in 1854. The dates therefore refer to different parts and phases of construction. To understand the chronology, it matters which part of the building is meant—from the older tower and the upper storey added later to the present-day church building.

The Catholic Freyden Chapel was built in 1728. Above its west entrance is the coat of arms of Christoph Franz von Hutten, Prince-Bishop of Würzburg. There is also a wayside shrine dating from 1657 at the edge of the village on Hammelburger Straße. These examples broaden the picture beyond the parish church to include other forms of religious architecture and heritage in Oberthulba.

The village’s history is also reflected in sites beyond its churches: remnants of the village wall can be found at the corner of Kapellenstraße and Obere Torstraße. The former municipal inn with courtroom at Marktplatz 7 is a gabled building with a volute gable dating from 1652. A gabled roof has two sloping surfaces that meet at the ridge; a volute gable is recognisable by its curved, scroll-like forms. Its former use as a municipal inn with courtroom adds a civic function to the architectural details.

Plan your stay around your interests

When looking for accommodation, consider what you would like to focus on. If the Extratour is to be the centrepiece of your stay, include the starting point, connecting path and current trail conditions in your plans. If you are particularly interested in architectural history, the different dates, functions and building styles offer further points of interest. If you have mixed interests, the hiking route and historic sites can be enjoyed as separate parts of your trip.

Bad Kissingen as a regional setting

Within the wider Bad Kissingen destination, the district of Bad Kissingen lies on the southern edge of the Rhön. The A 7 between Fulda and Würzburg and the A 71 between Erfurt and Schweinfurt cross the district from north to south. Since 1 January 2025, the district has been part of the Nahverkehr Mainfranken transport association (NVM). This information provides a broader overview of the main road routes and transport association; for planning your hike, the starting point in Oberthulba and the current bus connection to the “Zum Hellbach” stop remain the relevant details.
