Markt Nordheim combines a wine-making tradition with protected nature and traces of history. Local experiences include guided wine and culinary trails, circular hikes, a cycling route, and markets held on set dates. This allows you to plan your stay around your interests and combine nature, culture, and good food and drink.

Nature Reserve and Trails Through the Landscape

The core area of the Nordheim gypsum hills, including the Höllern gypsum cave and the “Sieben Buckel” (Seven Hills), has been designated a nature reserve since 1986. It covers 10.0 hectares and has site number 500.026. The Höllern nature reserve is home to rare animal and plant life. The “Über sieben Buckel musst du geh’n” (“You Have to Cross Seven Hills”) trail connects a hiking path, a nature reserve, and vineyards—a combination where landscape and movement meet.

For a different perspective on nature and the surrounding area, Markt Nordheim has a nature discovery site with a barefoot path, fire pit, lake, and observation hill. The hiking routes also offer different experiences: Route MN 1 is a circular trail through the forests of the Kehrenberg, described as rich in species, including butterflies. A signposted hiking trail through extensive mixed forest leads to Hohenlandsberg Castle ruins, where remnants of vaulted ceilings evoke times gone by.

If you prefer to explore by bike, the “Bocksbeuteltour” valley cycling trail offers a leisurely route through the villages of the WeinWanderWelt wine region. Bridges are part of the guided culinary hike through Markt Nordheim, and a stop at the Mühlenbrunnen is planned for a glass of wine or water. Each tour has its own focus, from forests and nature conservation to wine country and a shared stop for refreshments.

Wine, Guided Tours and Markets

There are various ways to experience wine in Markt Nordheim. These include vineyard tours with tastings and guided experiences through the wine village with wine tasting. Other guided tours explore the area’s rich history. At the local Häckerwirtschaften (seasonal wine taverns), wine tastings go hand in hand with a hearty snack. The local offerings thus combine insights into winegrowing with tastings and regional food culture.

The markets also follow a set schedule each year: the spring market takes place every year on the second Sunday after Easter Sunday. The autumn market is held annually on the first Sunday after September 14. If you would like to plan your stay around one of these dates, check a calendar to identify the relevant Sunday.

Culture and Traditions in the Municipality

St. George’s Church in Markt Nordheim dates back to the 14th century and contains an epitaph of the von Seinsheim family. Other cultural attractions are found throughout the municipality: the Osing land lottery takes place only once every ten years and has been added to the Federal Republic of Germany’s National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage. At the lottery held from September 20 to 22, 2024, 274 hectares of land were allocated among 213 rights holders.

In the village of Ulsenheim, the “Natur und Wengert” meditation trail runs through the vineyards, alongside the “Kleine Welten der Entfaltung” educational and discovery trail. Public concerts have been held at Schloss Seehaus since 2001. The Osingmuseum Herbolzheim provides information about the history, flora, and fauna of the Osing cultural monument. These attractions offer a broader perspective on the municipality beyond the town center and its wine offerings.

More to Explore in the Wider Travel Destination

Beyond Markt Nordheim, the wider travel destination of Neustadt A.D.Aisch-Bad Windsheim offers further regional attractions. At the Franconian Open-Air Museum in Bad Windsheim, the Bauhofstadel was built between 1441 and 1444. Its late-medieval roof structure spans an interior of around 360 square meters. For cyclists, the nearly 100-kilometer “vom Main zur Zenn” long-distance cycling route passes through the district of Neustadt a.d.Aisch-Bad Windsheim, connecting Kitzingen with Fürth.

The variety of hiking trails, wine tours, markets, and regional cultural attractions provides concrete ideas, without limiting your stay to just one type of experience.
