Discover Stegaurach
Accommodation in Stegaurach
Stegaurach can be discovered through trails with different focuses and the Siebenschläfer Chapel: a family-friendly circular route, themed trails relating to nature and landscapes, and a historic site offer a variety of starting points for planning your trip. The key is deciding what kind of experience you want to focus on: a particular route, nature themes, or the history of the chapel.
Hiking trails with different focuses
The S1 hiking trail is a 9.3-kilometre family-friendly circular route. It starts at the Siebenschläfer Chapel and passes through Mühlendorf and Seehöflein before returning to the starting point. Its length and circular route give you a clear guide when choosing a hike that starts and ends in the same place.
The 20-kilometre 7-Kapellen-Weg (Seven Chapels Trail) also starts at the Siebenschläfer Chapel. Marked with a “K,” it passes seven chapels. Compared with the S1, its stated distance is considerably longer, so you can use route length as one of the factors in planning. Check local trail conditions before setting out.
Nature and landscapes in the Aurachtal Valley
The Biodiversity in the Aurachtal Valley themed trail invites you to experience nature with all your senses. Its stations cover how to interact with nature, as well as different habitats and species. Each station includes a practical example and a tip for observation, so you can explore the trail through the topics covered along the way.
The water education trail in the municipality of Stegaurach runs between Höfen and Mühlendorf. It covers ecological, landscape-related and historical aspects of the Aurachtal Valley and has been in existence since 2005. Its thematic focus differs from that of the biodiversity trail: here, water, the landscape and the history of the valley come together. When choosing between the two trails, you can therefore consider which topics interest you most.
The Siebenschläfer Chapel and its history
The Siebenschläfer Chapel is not only the starting point for the two trails mentioned above, but also a place with its own historical tradition. In 1696, it was replaced on the same site by a larger stone building. Inside, an altar relief depicts the seven sleeping holy sleepers; above them, God the Father is shown surrounded by clouds and angels’ heads. The chapel can also be appreciated for the relief’s distinctive composition.
The chapel is also associated with a religious tradition: since 1860, the parish community has held an annual rogation procession there on 27 June. The date and the long-standing tradition give it a distinct place alongside the hiking trails and nature themes. When planning your trip, you can therefore decide whether to focus on a hike, the themed trail stations, or the history and religious tradition of the site.
Culture and nature in the wider Bamberg destination
The wider Bamberg destination offers further cultural and nature-related themes to help you plan your visit. Weissenstein Palace near Pommersfelden is one of Germany’s major Baroque complexes and houses an extensive gallery of art-historically significant works by French, Italian, German and Dutch painters. In the 18th century, Leonhard Dientzenhofer extensively transformed the monastery complex in Ebrach into a palace-like Baroque ensemble; its Gothic church, with its rose window, was preserved. Since 2004, the Museum of the History of Ebrach has been housed in the former Cistercian monastery and explores the history of the market town and the monastery.
Nature lovers will also find something to enjoy in the wider Bamberg destination: the Methuselah Tour around Ebrach, through the Spitzenberg nature reserve, leads to trees up to 250 years old or older and up to 144 centimetres thick. Alongside the themed trails in the Aurachtal Valley, this offers further discoveries explicitly focused on nature, while the palace, monastery complex and museum offer different cultural and historical points of interest.
