Trautskirchen can be explored in many ways: along marked hiking trails through mixed forest, on a nature trail with information panels, and among historic buildings. Its architectural history also gives the town a distinctive character – from a Baroque palace to half-timbered houses and a former mill.

Hiking Trails, Mixed Forest and Nature Trail

Trautskirchen has 45 kilometres of marked hiking trails, connected to a supraregional network of hiking and cycling routes. The larger mixed-forest area around the town is criss-crossed by trails and is ideal for longer walks. Alongside one clearly described loop, there are other marked trails to choose from when planning a walk.

The Trautskirchen Nature Trail is a circular route about three kilometres long. It begins on the eastern edge of town, leads through the Herrschaftswald forest to the northwest of Trautskirchen, and starts at the hiking car park by the bathing pond at the SchĂĽtzenhaus. Ten information panels share facts about the landscape, nature and history. Its length, circular route and information panels make it a specific alternative to exploring the larger trail network at will.

Another hiking option is the Zenntal Trail. It connects Neuhof an der Zenn, Trautskirchen and Obernzenn, passing through the landscape of the Zenn Valley. For cyclists, the Zenntal cycle path is a separate point of reference: it passes directly by the half-timbered residential and stable house in the village of Fröschendorf. The nature trail’s circular route of about three kilometres and the supraregionally connected hiking trails offer different options for planning, without describing the same type of tour.

Franconian Architectural History in the Town

Trautskirchen Baroque Palace was built in 1708 by Ludwig von Seckendorff zu Obernzenn und Meuselwitz as an imposing three-winged Baroque palace. The Church of St. Laurentius, with its choir tower, has a different architectural character: the Gothic church stands on the site of a former fortified cemetery. Its interior includes features from the 17th and 18th centuries, as well as stucco-framed panels.

The Hans Böckler House also connects a building with a historical theme. The small museum is housed in the former birthplace of Hans Böckler and features an exhibition on the trade union movement since industrialisation. In Fröschendorf, the half-timbered residential and stable house dates from the 16th or 17th century. The Buchermühle in the village of Buch is a substantial manor building and a former grain mill and sawmill; it is no longer in operation. Alongside the old, organically developed Franconian settlement structures and the notable half-timbered houses, modern buildings also shape the townscape.

For a broader perspective on architectural history beyond Trautskirchen, the wider destination of Neustadt A.D.Aisch-Bad Windsheim offers another distinct highlight: at the Franconian Open-Air Museum in Bad Windsheim, the Bauhofstadel was built between 1441 and 1444. Its late-medieval roof structure spans an interior of about 360 square metres without supports.

More Things to Do and Choosing a Place to Stay

Alongside hiking and architectural heritage, Trautskirchen also offers ways to get active in town. A playground with numerous play structures, a large sand area, a beach volleyball court and a ball court is located on the former sports field next to the town hall. The tennis court at Merzbacher StraĂźe 29 can be booked by phone at 09107 1560; please check current availability when booking.

Those with a particular interest in local history will find specific points of interest in Trautskirchen, including the palace, church, museum, historic mills and half-timbered buildings. The nature trail, hiking paths and cultural discoveries offer different starting points for tailoring a stay to your own interests.
