Fridolfing offers several ways to spend your days outdoors or at local events: the Water Lily Trail passes through several places, the Salzach floodplains offer views of the river landscape, and the bathing lake has games and leisure activities. The village festival and farmers’ market complement nature and exercise with music, children’s activities, regional food and crafts.

Circular Trail, Floodplain Forest and River Views

The Water Lily Trail is a seven-kilometre circular hiking route that starts and ends in Fridolfing. Along the way, it passes through Anthal, Rautenham, Engelschalling and Eizing, and by Europe’s largest water lily nursery. Cultural attractions are also located along the route. As a circular trail, it returns to Fridolfing; its length provides a concrete guide for planning your day. Dogs must be kept on a leash. As route conditions may change, check them before setting out.

The Salzach floodplains lie east of Fridolfing’s bathing lake. The Salzach embankment offers views of the river landscape. Snowdrops, spring snowflakes and wild garlic are among the plants found in the species-rich floodplain forest; flowering times vary by season. The area’s protected status also shapes this natural environment: since 1992, the floodplain forest ecosystem has been under special protection under the European Habitats Directive. This brings together a distinct view of the landscape and a remarkable ecological significance.

Activities at the Bathing Lake and in the Town Centre

Fridolfing’s bathing lake has a bocce court, giant chess and table tennis. Equipment for these activities is available at the kiosk; details about the activities and equipment may change. This makes the options at the lake different from the longer Water Lily Trail: here, several games and activities are available, while the trail is a circular hike of a set length.

The village festival takes place every year in July in the town centre. Music groups performing a range of styles, street performers and a children’s programme make up the festival. If you would like to plan your trip around the event, check the specific dates in advance. The Fridolfing farmers’ market is held twice a year on the Maibaumwiese. Regional food and crafts are on offer there. The two events have different focuses: the village festival centres on music, street performance and children’s activities, while the market features regional products and crafts.

Another Look at the Wider Travel Destination of Traunstein

The wider travel destination of Traunstein offers further themes relating to landscape and culture. Chiemsee and Waginger See are in Traunstein district; the Chiemgau Alps have more than 170 alpine pastures and peaks reaching up to 2,000 metres. The Seeoner Seen are among the district’s nature reserves. Waginger See and Tachinger See are designated as landscape conservation areas. Lakes, alpine scenery and designated protected areas therefore stand alongside one another as distinct regional themes.

The town of Traunstein also offers its own cultural and historical focus. The historic town walk passes the Klosterkirche cultural forum and then continues to the Salinenkapelle, the saltworks houses and the Salinenpark, built in 2019. The saltworks houses and chapel offer insight into Traunstein’s important salt history; the Salinenkapelle is Germany’s largest chapel. The brewery museum, which belongs to Hofbräuhaus Traunstein, is near the Jacklturm. The Heimathaus houses a town and toy museum with exhibits on civic culture, sacred art and the history of the saltworks.
