Manching: Celtic Rampart and Celtic-Roman History
Accommodation in Manching
In Manching, you can encounter Celtic and Roman history at several different sites: at the still-visible Celtic Rampart, along an archaeological trail and at the Celtic and Roman Museum. Together, these places tell the story of a long history of settlement and give your trip a clear cultural focus.
The Celtic Rampart and Manching’s Early History
From around 450 BC, the Celtic Vindelici settled in Manching, east of the Paar and south of the former main channel of the Danube. The Celtic Rampart around what was then Manching was a circular rampart with four gates. It enclosed the settlement in an oval shape and measured 7.5 kilometres in length and 2.25 kilometres in width. The rampart was up to four metres high; sections are still visible. These surviving sections make the scale of the structure tangible, while its shape and dimensions convey its former extent.
The Manching Archaeological Trail runs along the Celtic Rampart, built in the 2nd century BC. Twenty information panels at eleven locations provide insights into the Celtic and Roman past. The route is a circular trail and begins right at the Celtic and Roman Museum. This lets you connect the information with the landscape along the way, rather than learning about the rampart only as a name from history.
Archaeology in the Museum and Along the Trail
The Celtic and Roman Museum presents original finds, informative models, partial reconstructions at a scale of 1:1, and interactive features relating to the Celtic and Roman periods across 1,200 m². The exhibition offers a different way to explore the past from the outdoor stops: here, the focus is on artefacts and engaging displays, while the trail connects visitors with the rampart and the sites along the route. Exhibition content may change; if you want to see a particular subject, check the current exhibition before your visit.
Another archaeological discovery takes you to Oberstimm, a district of Manching. In 1986, two wooden shipwrecks dating to around 100 AD were found there. They are considered the best-preserved Roman military ships north of the Alps. The discovery broadens the picture of the municipality’s Roman past and also contrasts in date with the older Celtic history of the Celtic Rampart.
Special Visits and Events
The Messerschmitt Aviation Museum in Manching houses a collection of eight airworthy aircraft bearing the Messerschmitt name. Due to its location on the Airbus site, public access is limited. Museum tours take place about once a month; places are limited and certain conditions apply. Make sure your place is confirmed before making plans.
The Barthelmarkt is also traditionally held in Oberstimm around the last Sunday in August. This recurring local tradition adds a festive occasion to the area’s historical themes. If you want to plan your trip around the event, check the exact dates in advance.
