Rennertshofen offers two very different approaches to planning a trip: the architectural history around the market square and MarktstraĂźe, and the Wellheim Dry Valley, which runs through several places. Comparing the two lets you choose between a historic townscape and the countryside as the focus of your visit. The municipality adds to this picture with information in Mauern, a pilgrimage that continues to this day, and a connection to water that ranges from sailing to winter habitats for waterbirds.

Architectural history around the market square

Since April 2010, a signposted “Historical Walk” has led through the market town of Rennertshofen. On Marktstraße, the rectory dates from 1680. The town houses on the same street date from the 16th to the 18th century, while the schoolhouse there dates from the 17th century. These dates span several centuries and provide different points of reference if you are interested in the town’s architectural history. The walk adds a separate, signposted way to explore the market town’s history.

Landscape and information in Mauern

The Wellheim Dry Valley runs in broad loops from Rennertshofen via Hütting to Dollnstein. Alongside the individual buildings, this offers a landscape feature that extends across several of the places mentioned. When planning your trip, you can weigh up whether the market’s history or the course of the dry valley better suits your interests.

In the Rennertshofen district of Mauern, displays at the “Mauerner Höhlen” information centre provide information about the Mauerner Höhlen, the Urdonau Valley, the district of Mauern, the adjacent nature reserve and the natural monument “Steinerner Mann.” The centre brings together several topics about the surrounding area in one place. The Altmühl Cycle Path runs right past the information centre; if you include the cycle path in your plans, you will also find a point of reference for orientation and for exploring the topics covered there.

Traditions and water in the municipality

Another thread of tradition leads to Mauern: after the plague years of 1632 and 1649, the residents of Burgheim vowed to make an annual pilgrimage there. The pilgrimage continues to this day. It adds a tradition to the architectural history, with both its origins and its continuation linked to the years mentioned and to Mauern as its destination.

The Bertoldsheim Danube barrage in the municipality of Rennertshofen has long been used as a sailing area. The Bertoldsheim reservoir is also of European significance as a wintering site for waterbirds. These are two distinct connections with water: its long-standing use for sailing and the lake’s particular importance as a winter habitat. The winter aspect offers a specific seasonal perspective on the municipality’s natural features.

Culture in the wider destination of Neuburg-Schrobenhausen

The wider destination of Neuburg-Schrobenhausen also has a cultural highlight of its own: Neuburg Residence Palace is an important early Renaissance complex, built by Count Palatine Ottheinrich from 1530 to 1545. The palace chapel is one of the oldest Protestant church buildings in the world and contains frescoes by Hans Bocksberger dating from 1543. If you extend your travel plans beyond Rennertshofen to include the wider destination, this architectural history and its artworks add another perspective to the local attractions.

Choose Rennertshofen as your accommodation destination

The natural features in the municipality also offer a different focus from the architectural history. Comparing them can help you decide what kind of trip you want and then search for accommodation accordingly.
