Böhmischbruck lies in the romantic Pfreimdtal valley. The parish church of the Assumption of Mary is at the heart of a local history that spans medieval institutions and later architecture. Archaeological evidence from the Middle Ages and the early modern period has been found on the church grounds. As of 9 July 2024, the Bavarian State Office for Monument Protection’s register lists traces of earlier construction phases of the church, an associated medieval hospital, and a later provostry. The history surrounding the church therefore extends beyond individual architectural styles.

Church, hospital and provostry

Around the middle of the 13th century, construction of a Church of St. Mary began in Böhmischbruck in connection with the founding of a hospital. It was consecrated after 11 May 1259. The medieval hospital is documented for the years 1251 to 1263 and was run by a community of Beguines and Beghards. They were probably originally affiliated with the Dominican Order. For those interested in history, this offers a specific insight into the connection between church construction and a social institution, while showing that the two did not have the same role.

Another chapter began in 1299: Bishop Konrad V of Regensburg, with the consent of his cathedral chapter, granted Böhmischbruck to St. Emmeram’s Abbey for the establishment of a cella. The Provostry of Böhmischbruck developed from this arrangement. Together with the archaeological traces of earlier construction phases, this development charts several stages in the local history of the church.

Rococo altar and stone crosses

The parish church’s high altar is an early Rococo work, created between 1730 and 1740. Its structure includes four columns and pilasters. This adds a distinctly later artistic style to the church’s medieval history. At the bridge in Böhmischbruck, three stone crosses also commemorate the murder of four Benedictine monks by Hussites. The two subjects offer different points of focus: the design of a church interior on the one hand, and a historic memorial at the bridge on the other.

Cycling through the Pfreimdtal valley

The Pfreimdtal Cycle Route runs from the railway station in Untersteinbach via Pfreimd, Trausnitz, Böhmischbruck, Moosbach, Waidhaus and Eslarn to the Tillyschanz border crossing. Böhmischbruck is therefore part of a route connecting several places and stretching from a railway station to a border crossing. Between Pfreimd and Lohma, the cycle route follows the idyllic course of the River Pfreimd. The sequence of places provides an overview of the route, while the section between Pfreimd and Lohma adds the riverside scenery. The cycle route can thus be described both by its stops and by this stretch along the river.

Culture in Vohenstrauß

In Vohenstrauß stands Friedrichsburg Castle, the city’s landmark and a symbol of its Palatinate-Neuburg history. Count Palatine Friedrich had the Renaissance castle built between 1586 and 1593. The three-storey building has a steep gabled roof and five round towers topped with pointed helmets; it is one of the most remarkable castle buildings in the Upper Palatinate. Cultural events are held at Friedrichsburg Castle throughout the year. Its rooms host exhibitions by regional artists and performances by the Vohenstrauß City Theatre. If you are planning to attend a particular event, it is worth checking the current program.

The Vohenstrauß local history museum is housed in an 18th-century farmhouse. Its collections cover former living and working conditions; the city’s history and industrial history, including glass and porcelain; agriculture; religious folk art; and archaeological finds in and around Vohenstrauß. Everyday and regional history are thus presented alongside the architectural and cultural themes of the castle.
