Wilmersdorf: Green Spaces, Architecture and Encounters
Accommodation in Wilmersdorf
Wilmersdorf offers many ways to shape a stay: green spaces, striking buildings, a summer wine fountain and cultural offerings each add their own character. For families and other travelers, this means you can balance your plans between time outdoors, architecture, art and local events. When looking for accommodation, it helps to decide first which of these aspects matters most to you during your visit.
Green spaces and landscape history
Volkspark Wilmersdorf is the largest green space in Wilmersdorf. It is part of a green corridor about two and a half kilometers long, which follows a glacial trough together with Rudolph-Wilde-Park. Fennsee is the last visible remnant of the former waterscape. The park can therefore also be seen as part of a broader landscape feature: the green corridor follows the glacial trough, while Fennsee preserves a visible remnant of the former waterscape.
A large playground is located in the eastern part of Volkspark Wilmersdorf, at Hans-Rosenthal-Platz. This lively part of the park is used every day by families, young people and school classes. The 55,000-square-meter PreuĂźenpark offers a different focus: its paths lead to a large lawn for sunbathing. It is also known as a meeting place for Thai, Filipino and German families. Since the mid-1990s, more and more families have gathered there for picnics, creating an intercultural meeting place. The parks thus offer contrasting attractions: at Volkspark, the glacial landscape and Fennsee; at PreuĂźenpark, the lawn and its history as a place for people to come together.
Architecture, theater and art
The Schaubühne theater has been based in the Mendelsohn Building at Lehniner Platz since 1981. The building has been listed since 1979, bringing together theater history and a protected landmark. The Protestant Church on Hohenzollernplatz is also a listed building. It was built between 1930 and 1933 as a three-aisled basilica with a long nave. Auenkirche tells a different facet of local history: it is Wilmersdorf’s mother church. Schoeler-Schlösschen, meanwhile, is the oldest house in Wilmersdorf.
A contemporary art connection complements these historic sites. Since 1974, the Kommunale Galerie Berlin in Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf has been a forum for all fields of contemporary art. Anyone can create art in its studio. The cultural range therefore extends from architectural and local history to an opportunity to get creative yourself.
Wine fountain, fountain sculpture and weekly market
Since 1967, the Rheingau Wine Fountain has been held every year during the summer months at RĂĽdesheimer Platz. Winemakers from the Rheingau-Taunus district serve wines and sparkling wines there. The seasonal dates and opening hours are important when making specific plans; check them before your visit. Also at RĂĽdesheimer Platz is the Siegfried Fountain. Emil d. J. Cauer created it from sandstone in 1911; it depicts Siegfried as a horse tamer.
RĂĽdesheimer Platz subway station also features architectural details: its central supports are octagonal and made of granite. Partially preserved ceramic decorations depict satyrs, fauns, grapes, vine leaves and insects. A weekly market takes place at Hohenzollernplatz on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Check the dates before your trip. This lets you distinguish between a seasonal wine event, a weekly market and the buildings that shape the area all year round when planning your visit.
More perspectives on parks in Berlin
The wider destination of Berlin offers a park comparison of its own. Tiergarten is Berlin’s largest and most-visited inner-city park; it is ideal for walks, outdoor activities and picnics. Tempelhofer Feld is a large public park where people picnic, sunbathe and play sports. These Berlin parks broaden the picture beyond Wilmersdorf’s green spaces, while offering different attractions.
If you sort out these preferences first, you can compare accommodation for your trip to Berlin more effectively.
