Melchow lies on the Eberswalde glacial valley, and the 66 Lakes Hiking Trail runs right through the village. Signposted hiking trails start at the nature park station. One specific day hike leads from Melchow to Falkenberg: it is 22 kilometres long, passes through Trampe and Gamensee, and takes about five hours. The Fairytale Trail in Melchow invites people of all ages to stroll, explore and marvel. This means a longer hike and a themed walk are two different options for your stay.

Hiking with Different Trail Destinations

The hike to Falkenberg starts at Melchow nature park station. In the village, it follows the 66 Lakes Hiking Trail markers: a blue circle on a white square. The distance and approximate duration give you an idea of what to expect on your hiking day; check the trail markers and conditions on site.

The NonnenflieĂź circular trail follows a different route. If travelling by public transport, you can start at Melchow nature park station and finish at a bus stop in Spechthausen. When choosing between the trails, different planning considerations therefore come to the fore: the distance and approximate duration are given for the hike to Falkenberg, while the possible public transport starting point and the endpoint in Spechthausen are useful reference points for the NonnenflieĂź circular trail.

Consider which of these activities you would like to shape your stay, and use that to guide your further search.

Railway and Local History

The nature park station combines hiking information with a piece of railway history: it was built in 1904 as a small railway crossing keeper’s cottage on the Berlin–Stettin Railway. Melchow station is on the Berlin–Szczecin railway line and is served by Deutsche Bahn regional trains. If you plan to arrive by train, check the current connections before travelling—especially if you intend to start your hike at the nature park station.

Another perspective on local history can be found at the forge on the L 200. Along the village’s main road, Melchow has a listed forge that can be visited by arrangement. The station and the forge represent different historical interests: railway history on the one hand, and craftsmanship on the other.

Events and Barnim

Melchow’s events calendar includes an annual Advent market and a dragon festival that welcomes visitors. If you would like to plan your trip around a festival, check the dates in advance.

The Barnim travel region also offers other cultural and technical highlights: Chorin Monastery is a key example of North German Brick Gothic architecture. The Niederfinow Boat Lift is Germany’s oldest still-operating boat lift. Each offers a distinct focus in Barnim and complements the picture of Melchow’s hiking trails, Fairytale Trail and local history.
