Schönow offers different ways to explore nature and local history: two circular hiking trails wind through a protected landscape in Schönower Heide, while the historic village green and the fieldstone church are among the village’s defining features. Cultural events at the Galerie im Hühnerstall add another dimension, with individual visits possible by appointment. Nature observation, village history and culture each offer a different focus.

Nature Between Heathland and Wet Meadows

Schönower Heide is a protected natural area and also a Natura 2000 site designated as a Special Area of Conservation. Its landscape is characterised by broom heath, nutrient-poor sandy grassland and pioneer woodland. Fallow deer, mouflon and red deer graze there year-round. The heathland is considered a special natural attraction; walks, the flowering heath and wildlife observation are among the experiences associated with it. Two circular hiking trails with information and display boards provide a practical way to explore: they combine a route through the landscape with prompts to look more closely. Trail conditions may change; check the current trail situation before your visit.

The Panke/Faule Wiesen nature reserve offers a distinct contrast. Wet meadows and small bodies of water define the area, which is home to endangered animal and plant species. Paths in and around the reserve offer opportunities to explore. Compared with Schönower Heide, the focus shifts from heathland, sandy grassland, pioneer woodland and grazing animals to wet meadows, water and the habitats found there. This contrast can help you decide whether you would rather focus on vegetation types and year-round grazing or on wetlands and small bodies of water during your nature outing.

Village History and Culture

The historic village green and the fieldstone church are central features of Schönow’s villagescape. The church was built in the early 15th century; its brick tower dates from the period after the fire of 1860. The building thus brings together medieval origins and a later 19th-century construction phase. Anyone interested in architectural history has two specific points of reference: the early church building and the changes made after the fire. This makes it possible to trace village history through a particular building.

Cultural events take place at the Galerie im Hühnerstall in Schönow; individual visits are possible by appointment. Be sure to arrange your visit and check the programme in advance. The gallery is accessible on foot, by bicycle and by car; another option is to take the S2 to Zepernick and then walk for 20 minutes. Arranging your visit in advance makes it possible to plan an individual gallery visit as part of your stay.

Choose Accommodation Based on Your Planned Experiences

For families and other travel groups, choosing accommodation can start with the interests of those travelling together: Would you like nature observation and the landscape to shape your stay, are you interested in the village church’s architectural history, or would you like to plan a cultural visit? The different themes provide specific starting points for weighing up everyone’s preferences, without assuming that everyone has the same idea of a perfect day. If children and adults have different interests, you can first decide which visits or nature experiences matter most to you.
