Werder combines a village church with a long history of construction and hiking trails that link the village to regional routes. Seasonal baking days are also held at the traditional wood-fired oven. The range of experiences extends from exploring cultural history to a nature-focused hike or a seasonal culinary event in 2026.

Werder’s Fieldstone Church

Werder’s village church is a solid fieldstone building. Cistercian monks probably began construction before 1234. The west tower with its tent roof was added in the late Middle Ages, around the middle of the 15th century. The presumed early start of construction and the later addition of the tower point to two distinct building phases. For anyone interested in village churches, this striking building offers a history stretching back to the early 13th century.

Church Trails and Circular Routes

The Lilien circular trail links Rehfelde, Werder and Zinndorf and their churches. These were built during the Cistercian period, giving the route a shared focus on cultural history. The Liederweg also offers circular routes of different lengths: an 8 km option runs from Rehfelde via Werder and Zinndorf and back to Rehfelde. A 10 km route runs from Rehfelde via Werder, Zinndorf and the Zinndorf fields, then back to Rehfelde. At 8 and 10 km, the routes described can be compared by distance; the 8 km option is the shorter one.

Hike to the Rotes Luch

Another hiking trail leads from Rehfelde station through the district of Werder to the Rotes Luch nature reserve. The area is quiet and notable for its high biodiversity. If you are planning this hike, check the access conditions locally.

Baking Days at the Wood-Fired Oven

During the 2026 season, regular baking days are held at the wood-fired oven in Werder. Prepared baked goods such as bread, pizza or cake can be baked in the traditional wood-fired oven for a small fee. If you would like to plan your stay around a baking day, check the dates for the 2026 season.

More Things to Explore in the Rehfelde Destination

As a broader destination, Rehfelde offers more cultural and nature-related attractions. The Rehfelde local history museum presents the history of Rehfelde in a permanent exhibition and a small local archive. Exhibits cover rural life, industry, crafts and trades, schools, the Ostbahn railway and the fire brigade; visitors can also consult the local chronicles of the municipality. If you are planning a visit, check the visitor information beforehand.

Along the Liederweg Rehfelde–Werder–Zinndorf’s 15-kilometre network of trails are granite blocks, black locust trunks and fieldstones bearing song panels for 36 German and nine Polish folk songs. Large information boards along the birch path of the nature trail provide information about native songbirds, the red wood ant, beetles, and natural and artificial caves. The nature and adventure circular trail passes through the Rehfelder Heide and by Zimmersee.

The Rehfelde tourist pavilion provides information about hikes on the municipality’s circular trails, in Märkische Schweiz and in the surrounding area. If you are planning to travel there, check the operating details beforehand.
