Discover Eisenhüttenstadt: Planned City, Art and Craft
Accommodation in Eisenhüttenstadt
Eisenhüttenstadt combines the history of a planned city with public art and vivid insights into crafts and everyday culture. The town can be explored through a range of themes: from the city’s development and museum collections to historical impressions in the district of Fürstenberg (Oder).
Planned City and Art in Public Spaces
Residential Complexes I to IV represent the first planned and organised city founded in the GDR. This history offers a special perspective for visitors: the idea of a planned city itself becomes a subject, not just individual exhibitions. More than 120 sculptures, three-dimensional artworks and murals can be found in Eisenhüttenstadt’s public spaces. As you explore, take a closer look at the different art forms, from three-dimensional works to murals.
Art, Crafts and City History at the Museum
The Eisenhüttenstadt Municipal Museum has three departments. Its gallery displays GDR art in the forms of painting, graphic art and small sculptures. Visitors can also see an authentic historic cobbler’s workshop from around the turn of the 20th century. Objects and documents relating to the traditional basket-making craft in Fürstenberg (Oder) add to these insights. The museum thus offers a perspective ranging from fine art and a historic workshop to a local craft tradition.
Fürstenberg (Oder) is a district incorporated into Eisenhüttenstadt. Its townscape includes a Gothic parish church, restored historic houses and a well-preserved old town centre. The old town centre is ideal for a stroll and offers a different emphasis from the planned city layout: historic houses and ecclesiastical architecture take centre stage here.
Explore the City in Different Ways
The Tourist Information team can arrange a personalised city tour. Another way to explore the protected urban monument is on a Trabant tour. The two options offer different ways of discovering the city. Check the availability and booking conditions for the Trabant tour before your trip.
Cycle Routes, Getting Here and the Surrounding Area
Eisenhüttenstadt lies directly on the Oder–Neisse Cycle Route, which runs from the source of the Oder in the Czech Republic to the Baltic Sea. Rental bikes can be used to explore the planned city layout; check availability before your trip. Cycle routes along the Friedrich-Wilhelm Canal also provide access to the nearby Schlaubetal valley. The nearby Oder landscape and the Schlaubetal offer their own scenic impressions as well as opportunities for peace and relaxation.
There are also two stated ways to get here: Eisenhüttenstadt can be reached by RE1 and via the A12. As transport connections may change, it is advisable to check the latest services before travelling. When deciding between exploring the city and cycling in the surrounding area, consider your own interests: the city’s history can be combined with art and the museum, while the cycle route takes you beyond the town itself.
Insel Recreation Area
The Insel recreation area includes extensive meadows and woodland, an indoor swimming pool, a skate park and playgrounds. It also has a small animal park with enclosures for donkeys, goats and other animals. For planning a visit with children, the playgrounds and animal park are specific places to start; the area also offers everything from natural spaces to sports and leisure activities.
When looking for accommodation in Eisenhüttenstadt, you can start by considering the focus of your stay: the history of the planned city and its museum, public art or cycle routes in the surrounding area. This lets you begin your choice with the travel experience that interests you most.
