Beelitz Heilstätten: Forest, Ruins and the History of Technology
Accommodation in Beelitz Heilstätten
Beelitz Heilstätten combines a forest landscape with traces of architectural and technological history. A rooftop forest growing on a World War I ruin, the “Baum & Zeit” treetop path and the historic heating and power plant give the site its distinctive character. When planning your trip, you can focus on nature, architecture and technological history separately, and add a guided tour or cycle ride.
Treetop Path and Mature Parkland
The “Baum & Zeit” treetop path crosses the “Alpenhaus” World War I ruin. A unique rooftop forest has been growing on the ruin’s roof since 1945. Three quarters of the mature forest have been preserved in the parkland surrounding Beelitz Heilstätten. Here, nature and historic buildings meet at close quarters as you look out over the site.
The path is more than 700 metres long and has five large viewing platforms in its tower. The top platform can be reached by lift. The path’s total height up to the top edge of the viewing platform roof is 40.50 metres; the elevation of the terrain is 67.40 metres above sea level. These figures refer to different elevation points. The path therefore offers several perspectives on the grounds, and the two height figures should not be confused.
Architecture and the History of Technology
The heating and power plant is considered a landmark and the centrepiece of the historic ensemble at Beelitz Heilstätten. Its water tower is 41 metres high. The heating and power plant is the oldest energy centre of its kind in Germany and combines a district heating plant with a power station. During the founding and development phase from 1898 to 1902, a leading architect shaped the design of the Heilstätten. Together, these landmarks offer an insight into the site’s architectural and technological history.
Guided Tours and a Cycle Ride
Visitors can join guided tours of the forest park and the preserved buildings at Beelitz Heilstätten. Most of the complex is accessible only as part of guided tours and/or events. If you want to explore the grounds, plan your visit around these options.
The “Tour de Beelitz” cycle route offers another perspective. It starts and ends at Beelitz-Heilstätten station, is around 22 kilometres long and follows a flat route. Along the way, it runs on forest and sandy paths, as well as some paved sections. It is advisable to check the route details locally before setting off. Its approximate length and the described surface make it easy to include this tour as a separate focus in your day’s plans.
More to Explore in the Wider Beelitz Destination
In the wider Beelitz destination, the Old Town offers its own historical focus. Around 800 years old, Beelitz Old Town invites you to explore its historic buildings. Beelitz Town Church was first mentioned in a document in 1247 and was initially a Romanesque pillar basilica built of hewn fieldstones. According to the legend of the Holy Blood, Beelitz became the first pilgrimage site east of the Elbe and possibly in the German-speaking world; a chapel was built around 1340.
The history of asparagus is also part of the region’s story: in 1861, Beelitz farmer and townsman Carl Friedrich Wilhelm Herrmann was the first to grow asparagus on a commercial scale; other residents of Beelitz gradually followed his example. The Ernst Vogel watermill is located on the edge of Beelitz Old Town, on Mühlenstraße.
At Beelitz Water Tower Park, the Activity Park combines the historic vegetation around the water tower with new facilities. Paths, exercise and play equipment, and places to relax bring the grounds to life. The skate park there includes a bowl, a quarter pipe, a plaza, a graffiti wall, trampolines and a “chill area”. The Beelitz Stargazers are also based in the water tower, where they invite visitors to events and skywatching with a “view from above”.
