Golm connects Golmer Luch with a local history visible in its churches, monument and campus. On the outskirts lies a recreation and hiking area; its meadows and diverse birdlife lend it a strong natural character. The area is also home to a Neo-Gothic brick church, a village church on the site of its medieval predecessor, and a monument commemorating a political speech given in 1910. If you are looking for accommodation, you can decide based on whether you want nature and hiking or historic sites to define your stay.

Golmer Luch and birdlife

On the outskirts, Golmer Luch is considered a recreation and hiking area. Its meadows lie within the “Potsdamer Wald- und Havelseengebiet” landscape protection area. Increasingly wet conditions have led to a rich diversity of species in the Luch. Herons, cranes, ravens, nightingales, storks and owls are found there in large numbers. The landscape caters to different interests: you can plan a hike as a standalone activity or focus your stay more on observing nature.

There is a stork bench at the entrance to the cemetery. From there, you can watch a pair of storks arrive in March and April; whether you actually spot them depends on conditions in a given year. A popular circular hiking trail starts at the science park in Golm and takes around 1.5 hours. This gives you an approximate duration for planning your day, alongside a seasonal wildlife experience whose chance of being observed depends on conditions each year.

Churches, organ and local history

The Kaiser-Friedrich-Kirche is a Neo-Gothic brick church, consecrated on 24 July 1886. A Gesell organ dating from 1886 has been preserved there to this day. In addition to Protestant and Romanian Orthodox services, concerts and talks are held regularly. If you are interested in architecture and musical history, this place brings together its architectural style, preserved organ and present-day use. If you are interested, check the date of a specific concert or talk.

The Alte Dorfkirche Golm stands on the site of a medieval church first mentioned in historical records in 1289. It is considered the oldest building in Potsdam. The Karl Liebknecht Monument marks a different historical moment: it commemorates the place where, on 31 July 1910, Karl Liebknecht spoke to workers from Golm and Eiche about the struggle against Prussia’s three-class voting system. Together, the two memorial sites take you from the town’s long architectural history to a specific political event.

Architecture and routes beyond Golm

The Golm campus also has architectural highlights: the “Golden Cage” is at the Institute of Physics and Astronomy, while the “Black Cube” is at the university library. The two names refer to different buildings and make architecture another theme alongside churches and landscape.

Sanssouci Park is 5 kilometres from Golm and easily reached on foot or by bicycle via Lindenallee. Another route runs from Golm via Mühlendamm and the Wublitz Bridge to Töplitz Island. Alongside the circular hiking trail in Golmer Luch, there are also routes to specifically named destinations; for the route to Töplitz, Mühlendamm and the Wublitz Bridge serve as the landmarks.

Regional rail line RB20 stops in Golm. It connects the town with Potsdam-Griebnitzsee, Potsdam Park Sanssouci, Potsdam Central Station and destinations in Berlin’s northern outskirts. The line runs hourly on weekdays only. If you plan to use this connection, check the timetable for your travel day. This allows you to coordinate your arrival with your choice of hike, seasonal nature observation or historic sites.
