Discover Niemegk: Town Hall, Water Tower and Fläming Trails
Accommodation in Niemegk
Visitors to Niemegk will find a range of reasons to stay: Renaissance architecture and historic places of remembrance sit alongside a circular hiking trail through meadows, pastures and small groves. A cycling tour leads to fieldstone churches; the historic water tower houses a museum and regional specialities. There are also festivals and events organised by the Niemegker Volkstheater e.V.
Town Hall, Post Mile Column and Town Church
Niemegk Town Hall is a Renaissance building. After it was destroyed in 1547, it was rebuilt on the same site in 1570, on a larger scale. The post mile column adds another historical touch: it dates from 1725 and recalls the town’s former affiliation with Electoral Saxony. Together, the town hall and column offer two different ways to explore local history: the architectural history of a specific building and a reminder of Niemegk’s former affiliation.
St. John’s Town Church can also be recognised by its distinctive architectural features: it is built of red brick and has a tall, slender tower that shapes the town’s skyline. The church is one of the stops on the signposted town walk through Niemegk. You can register and collect the key at the parish office at Kirchplatz 9 by calling 033843-51338; check this visitor information in advance.
Explore the Fläming on foot or by bike
Nature Park Circular Hiking Trail 44 runs around Niemegk through flowering meadows and pastures, past small groves and along the Fläming streams Buffbach and Adda. There are lovely views along the way. The route is marked with a red 44 featuring hills on a white square to help with navigation. This allows you to use the trail markers and the landscape features described here when planning your hike.
Another way to explore the surroundings is the Fieldstone Church Cycling Tour: from Niemegk, it covers 29 kilometres and visits seven typical Fläming fieldstone churches in the southern part of the nature park. The route has been signposted since 2017. You can choose between two different kinds of outing: a circular hiking trail around Niemegk and a cycling tour with a set distance and seven churches as destinations.
Soda museum and specialities in the water tower
Niemegk’s historic water tower is listed as a protected monument. The soda museum’s collection includes machines for filling and cleaning bottles, bottle stoppers and historic glass bottles. It offers a look at different aspects of bottle production and storage. A farm shop in the same historic water tower offers regional specialities to sample and buy. Opening hours and visitor arrangements may change, so check before your visit. Niemegk outdoor swimming pool is also located at the historic water tower.
Festivals and theatre in Niemegk
Niemegk hosts many festivals each year, including the town festival in early May and Oktoberfest. If you want to plan your trip around a particular festival, check the latest dates and programmes in advance. This lets you tailor your travel dates to the occasion without relying on a specific day’s programme.
The former cultural centre has been home to the Niemegker Volkstheater e.V. since 2004. Events there include original productions, guest performances by theatre groups, musicals and concerts. Check which performances coincide with your travel dates before making plans; the programme varies.
