Wittenberge: Elbe River Landscape, City History and Experiences
Accommodation in Wittenberge
Wittenberge is located in the Elbe River landscape within the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. At the same time, the city’s history tells a story of industry and sewing machine production. Museums, a viewing tower and active experiences offer a variety of things to do: you can explore historical developments, enjoy views across the city or focus on getting active.
City history at specific locations
The Wittenberge City Museum traces the town’s development from a small farming town to an industrial city across two floors. Wittenberge’s history includes the production of Singer and Veritas sewing machines, which played a defining role in the city. The Stone Gate dates back to the 13th century; its exhibition covers its former use as a prison, the Roaring Twenties and the Elbe in Wittenberge. Part of the City Museum’s permanent exhibition is also housed in the Stone Gate. This section of the exhibition can only be visited as part of certain guided tours, on special event days or by arrangement with the museum.
The tower and industrial history
On six floors, the Clock Tower presents the eventful history of the tower, the sewing machine factory and Wittenberge’s urban development. Climbing its 192 steps rewards you with panoramic views over Wittenberge and the Elbe River Landscape Biosphere Reserve. If you’re planning to enjoy the view, check the current opening status before your visit.
Today’s Historic Railway Roundhouse in Wittenberge is a circular engine shed built in 1889. As a historic building, it adds another tangible point of interest to the themes of urban development and industry.
Compare active experiences
The climbing tower at the Old Oil Mill in Wittenberge has two courses and an outdoor slide. Check the operator’s current access and participation requirements before your visit. The approximately 10-metre-deep indoor diving tower offers introductory dives, diving for children and diving certification courses. This gives you a choice between climbing courses and a slide on the one hand, and diving with a range of course options on the other.

Prignitz as the wider region
In the wider Prignitz travel region, the Brandenburg section of the cross-state “Elbe River Landscape – Brandenburg” Biosphere Reserve covers approximately 53,000 hectares and lies almost entirely within Prignitz district. The region has 1,100 kilometres of designated cycling routes and 17 recommended bike tours that showcase regional attractions and special features. For specific tours, it’s a good idea to check the current status of the cycling network. On the Elbe in Prignitz, experienced paddlers can also take tours that include wildlife watching in the Biosphere Reserve. These cycling and paddling options offer a regional perspective beyond Wittenberge’s city history and experiences. In Prignitz, the Pritzwalk Museum Factory explores industrialisation in rural areas; visitors can also get hands-on in the museum print shop and hand-weaving workshop.
