Felixsee is an artificial lake created by regional mining, with clear blue water and sandy shore areas. There are numerous bathing spots on the eastern shore. By contrast, the bathing areas on the western shore below the bungalow settlement have been permanently closed due to the risk of landslides associated with past mining. Observe the local safety signs there. This distinction is important when planning your visit: not all areas of the lake are accessible for swimming.

Lakeshore and Views from the Tower

You can reach the eastern shore on foot via a wide forest path. The route through the forest is therefore part of the journey to the water. Two different perspectives take centre stage at Felixsee: bathing spots on the eastern shore and views of the landscape from above.

The observation tower at Felixsee is 36 metres high, with 160 steps leading to the top platform. From there, you can see across the Lusatian forest landscape and the Muskau Arch, with its gorges and Gieser. There is free parking near the tower. Its height, the climb and the views make the tower a destination in its own right, while the lake and its shores offer a different focus.

More to Explore in the Wider Spree-Neiße Destination

If you would like to explore the wider Spree-Neiße destination beyond Felixsee, you will find a variety of landscape and route themes. The Spree Cycle Route crosses the Spree-Neiße region for about 60 kilometres and runs mostly along paved river dikes. The Lower Lusatian Mining Tour passes active lignite mines as well as landscapes recultivated after mining. These offer two distinct route profiles: river dikes on the one hand, and landscapes shaped by mining and recultivation on the other.

Spree-Neiße also has its own cultural highlights. The Prince Pückler Trail showcases examples of landscape design from Pückler’s time and the present day. The Sorbian Impressions Tour offers insights into the lives and traditions of the Sorbian/Wendish minority living in the region. The East German Rose Garden in Forst (Lausitz) offers a different experience: visitors can admire tens of thousands of roses in almost 1,000 varieties across its 17-hectare park. These attractions range from landscape design and culture to an extensive rose collection.

Choose the Right Base

If Felixsee is the main focus of your trip, consider whether the bathing spots on the eastern shore or the observation tower are more important to your plans. If you are visiting other destinations in the wider Spree-Neiße area, routes, landscape themes and cultural attractions may also influence your choice of base. Choose your accommodation location with the places you plan to visit in mind. This way, your search can reflect your personal itinerary and whether you mainly want to spend time at the lake or combine different regional experiences.
