Seehausen: Half-Timbered Architecture and Monastery History
Accommodation in Seehausen
Seehausen combines a striking location with distinctive traces of cultural history. The linear village lies directly on a Lanke in the north of Lake Oberuckersee. A rare half-timbered church, a richly decorated Renaissance altar, and the history of the former monastery area to the south give the village several points of interest.
Half-Timbered Church and Renaissance Altar
The village church in Seehausen was completed in 1753 and is considered a rare half-timbered church in the Uckermark. Inside, the three-part altar retable is a striking feature: it is richly decorated with Renaissance ornaments and dates from between 1560 and 1580. The church’s completion and the much earlier date of the altar retable provide two distinct points of reference for a visit. Anyone interested in architecture and intricate details will find a concrete reason here to take a closer look at the village’s history.
Marienwerder Monastery and a Former Bridge
The former Cistercian nunnery of Marienwerder once stood on the monastery peninsula south of Seehausen. Archaeological finds from the site can be viewed at the Cultural History Museum of the Dominican Monastery in Prenzlau. These include the largest coherent collection of pilgrim badges ever found. The history of the monastery site thus also leads to an exhibition in Prenzlau.
Another historical connection concerns the Marienwerder Peninsula: it was once linked to Burgwall Island in Lake Oberuckersee by a covered wooden bridge. The former bridge can be understood as part of the peninsula’s history; it is not a present-day route marker. Together with the former monastery, this part of the story shows how various historical themes are connected with Marienwerder.
Cycling and Pony Riding
The “Lake Tour around the Uckermark Lakes” cycle route passes through Seehausen. It is signposted with a route marker featuring blue waves on a white background. This gives cyclists a specific point of reference for the tour, without specifying a particular duration or level of difficulty.
Guided pony rides are offered for children aged three and over at Ponyhof Seehausen. They are available only by telephone arrangement. Anyone planning this activity should take the necessary arrangement into account. Pony riding is therefore clearly different from the signposted cycle route: making an advance telephone booking is part of the planning.
Further Orientation and Regional History
An information board on the road in Seehausen, near the railway station, explains the history of the Angermünde–Stralsund railway. It is one of the oldest railway lines in Brandenburg and Western Pomerania. The board gives the subject of railway history a place of its own in the village and adds another historical perspective to the evidence provided by the church and monastery.
In the wider Oberuckersee destination, the Oberuckersee Lake Tour passes through Potzlow, among other places. Its sights include the Wooden Roland. This regional reference adds another cultural and historical point of interest to the picture of Seehausen, without combining the stops into a single route.
Choose Accommodation Based on Your Travel Interests
Here’s how to tailor your accommodation search to your planned activities. For a pony ride, a telephone arrangement is part of the planning; for the cycle tour, the route marker described above provides a specific point of reference.
